so I bought a 2002 fe650 from a member here and we bump started it on purchase day because the kickstarter is broken(red flag number one). All is well. get it home replace kickstarter.....no start. I proceed to tear apart the carb, check the valves, upgrade to dutch clog, along with new timing chain and cam bearings, R6 starter motor. nothing. At least it kicks easier now. I checked for spark early on and we were ok. fast forward three weeks as I am getting ready to set it on fire, and roll it down a hill and my Dad wants to check for spark again. Zilcherooney. In a stroke of genius I decide then to check the stator: Black to Green-172 Ohms, sweet I think, Black to Red: ZERO. Good thing Dan at Motoxotica has a Sparks stator in stock. Maybe this weekend I will be a Husaberg RIDER not just an OWNER. My KTM 17 inch front is finally shipped too. Might be an okay week after all.

Don't be so hard on yourself!! If you got it for the right price you should have a great bike once you sort it, and you'll be confident with what's inside it. It's all part of getting a fixer-upper.

If the seller sold it to you promising that all was rosy then he is the jack - not you.

Derek, don't be to hard on your self, the bumping thing could of been a sign the stator was on it's way out but these are hidden problems and one can't predict when they are going to happen.
If you had tested the resistance the day you bought it, it would of show a resistance hence it ran, ZERO Ohms will always mean NO run.
Hope you will be happy with one of my rewinds let us know how you get on at the weekend.

Regards

Sparks.

Yeah, I am mostly pissed that I didn't think to check for spark again during one of the sweaty cursing kick sessions  Oh well; hopefully this will fix it.

Sparks, Your stators kick butt ! I also got one from Dan @ Motoxotica, it was for a friends 501. He says it feels like a new machine. I suspect that the stator was going for some time, as he was feeling like he had a clogged fuel filter. After he talked to me I re-checked with you as to proper ohms values, went by his house and pronounced the stator dead. Felt kind of proud of myself when the thing fired on third kick after the rewound unit was installed. Don't worry Monkey Boy you will be riding this weekend ! And with the juice from a Sparks stator you won't believe the power.

Can you let me know what Dan is asking for the Sparks Stators? I've got a buddy with my old 650 who could use one.

I believe it was $400.00 + some shipping and tax, plus he wants your old one for a core. I think he sends 4 or more over to Sparks at a time. I have an old stator that I replaced with a new one I got off ebay . I'm thinking that with the dollar being at 12 or 13 month highs against the Euro I mught just send that one to Steve myself as a back up since I have 2 Bergs now. I will tell you this Ken, my buddy says there is a very noticable difference in the power the bike has and his gas mileage is up. Expensive but he feels that it was very worthwhile.
Adios
Ron

I too run a sparks stator in my '03. Well worth the $$$, or euro actually... As an example, I scored an operating stator, and flywheel off of ebay for a steal, and I've considered sending the other SEM to sparks for a rewind as well...

Dan quoted me $409 I think. BTW top-notch service from Motoxotica. Dan always has time to talk to me and help me out, and my parts always arrive the next day. A real boon to have this resource. Here's to hearing the berg fire this Friday!!

Derek

Derek, Would really like to hear from you on how you like the rewound stator, Good Luck ! it should be a happy Friday.

Ron

Well, we have bright blue spark! But still no start. got several promising backfires though  maybe this weekend we will get it started.

Derek

Check your timing, and check your valve adjustment. Use the 1/6 th turn method first, then if it is a little noisy do it again using 1/8 th turn. I had the same thing happen when I put a new motor back in my bike, and I found the valves just a tad on the tight side. At least you have some sign of life !
Ron

I might try 1/6th turn method tomorrow. The right mark on the flywheel lined up at TDC but I am going to try advancing and retarding the stator to see if it changes anything. We will see. My experience tells me that a backfire means it is timing related but might not be.

Derek,

Don't forget that the original marks will probably be out anyway 5 to 6 degrees, the same width of the two lines on the flywheel, worth a look at.
But it should fire up regardless of the slot position, there is not enough movement in the slots to throw it that fare out for it not to run.

Sparks.

Okay so I advanced the stator all the way and it wouldn't even backfire. So I ******** it and got a thump and more backfires. The final one set the carb on fire with starting fluid. So my Dad give me a good shove down the hill I pop the clutch in 4th while feathering the manual decomp and it fires up and runs like a champ. We did the push start several times with the same result but still no start on the kicker. May upgrade the battery and check on the sprague clutch So I can e-start, but I would still like to be able to kick the darn thing. Any hints??
