Ok.. I'm on the case again.
Having read many posts on this subject, I decided to try for myself wiring a 2nd battery in series with my existing one, having connected it only to the starter-motor supply.
Wow! It spins like mad and starts instantly.
It's got me thinking ....
It must be revolutions and not battery power that necessary in my case.
Many times i've stuck my car battery over the battery via jump leads and its turning ok, but still wont start - yes maybe my starter-motor is a bit worn. Maybe my sprag clutch bearings need replacing. Maybe my decomp isn't 100% - but we've all tried them before....
6 V Starter-motor !
No need to alter electrics. It will spin twice as fast !
Sounds logical to me.
What do u think ?

If you truly installed the second battery in series, then you now have 24 Volts going to the starter. This (I would think) would not be a wise. The current flowing to the starter would be cut to about half but the electrical pressure is in excess of the starter's design. How will the charging system be able to charge 24V with an output of about 13.5-15V?
If a 6 Volt starter is used, the current flowing through the cables would now have to double, this would necessitate installing cables twice the size of the 12V ones and now we are back to the charging problem again.
I have an old bike, a 95 FE600E with a dellorto. I spent a lot of time on this site reading and asking questions, and now, with the knowledge I've recieved my bike starts off the button hot or cold every time.

Yes it is a fact that the SEM ignition must spin at a certain minimum RPM (750?) in order for it to produce spark. So therein lies part of the pre-Kukusan ignition problem.

I accept that 24v at the starter-motor is beyond design parameters and certainly would not try it if everything was running normally. But, for example, with my plug out, there is still quite a lot of resistance on the kickstart and generally I feel a lot of drag on the starter-motor when turning.
Maybe the extra boost is compensating for all the other little equated losses elsewhere on the leccy start system. I'm almost of the impression that everything has to be like brand new and finely balanced in a Berg in order to make it fire of the button.
As far as charging is concerned: The 2nd battery is in series between the solenoid output and the starter-motor, therefore a charging circuit incorporating diodes in each leg is all that would be required, this can be taken directly off the existing regulated charge circuit...
I'm sorry i don't see why the amperage would be halved - but i never was any good at physics.
Either way it spins like mad and starts straight away. :eek:

With regards to the 6v starter-motor, i certainly won't have to install thicker cables as mine are already 25mm meter tails (house mains feed cables). Again though, I don't see why the current would double, just because the motor was 6v - :?

Yup, i reckon i'm spinning at around 750 rpm, until I blast her with 24v and spin her at about 4000 rpm

So if you find yourself not quite making it up that big widowmaker hill just give her a blast of e-start button and away you go.

I wonder how much horsepower your new e-start system adds? :)
