Now that time has passed, and opinions have been formed....who likes the alpinestar tech 10's? I have tech 8s, have loved them for years, but the leather is cracking and they are just gettin worn out. Should I get the new tech 8s, or get the tech 10s? Who has made the switch, and would you do it again?

Tech 8s are cheaper and they do last. You get what you pay for. I know from different owners the 10s have much better protection.

Now, I have said this several times and each time I am met with disbelief ("how can anything be better than Alpinestars?") but the Fly Talon IIs are better than the Tech 8s and very close to the 10s for half the price of the latter.

Don't waste your money on Alpine Stars. If you try Garne SG 10 you will never wear Astars again!

As well as Sidi boots (according to DV, who also told me about the Fly boots).

Tech 10's

Last year after a couple of mates (that's buddies or pals for the non Aussies out there) recommended T10's so I tried them on as well. T8's were too tight across the bridge (toes) and to tight on my calves.

The Gearnes were no comfortable for me either. The Sidi's were comfortable but some mates had issues with the screw on panels coming loose. Plus I didn't like the fact that the inner felt too soft and the hard outer had "no feel".

I ended up trying on some T10's at a local retailer. Local price was $799 take it or leaver it so I bought from an ebay out of the US ($450us).

All my mates with t10's refer to them as slippers because they are that comfortable. They are great when new and only get better.

Yesterday we did a river crossing (out near Eildon VIC) and I wandered up stream to get some fresh water. Even with the T10's almost submerged no water got in. None of the cheaper options fitted my legs properly.

After 20 or so rides (2500km they are still like new).

Try lots of different types on and see what fits YOU best.

I've never tried T-10's, but I'd rather ride a Honda than surrender my T-8's...

I've got an early pair of T8s, fantastic boot, but heavy. 9 years and 35,000 km, 2 resoles and I've lost count of the number of insteps replaced, which is a great feature. Dunno why, but I wear out the left instep at a rate of 3 or 4 to one compared to the right, which means that I've got plenty of spare rights if any one wants any.

Got a great deal, and therefore a new pair of T8s, as yet unworn, but they are hugely changed, and heaps lighter compared to my old ones, so time will tell how they go compared to the oldies. I'll swap sometime, but they still fit like an old pair of boots, and still protect, although not all that waterproof. Shoe Goo, and silicone lube do wonders for longetivity..

I'm not sure how easily the T10 style sole can be replaced by your average bootmaker, which may limit their ultimate life.

Cheers
Steve

thanks for all the great responses. I learned a lot from reading them. I mostly realised how much I dont like the way the tech 8s are tight in the calf area, and the buckles chew up my fingers. The straps are all the the max length adjustment, and they are still too tight (except the very top one). I tried on the new fox f3 (2008version) and they had a tremendous amount of room in the calf area, no where near maxing the straps out, even with my shin guards and thick moto socks. They just didnt fit well in the toe box area. I'll try the boots recommended here next. The tech 8s have thier charms, but they sure arent perfect! Ill try the 10's, the sidi, the g3, and the fly boots. Thanks for the recommendations.
