Tach. Is it just me?

Is it just me, or does anybody else miss having a tach? As a riding aide, the clock feature is useless to me. It doesn't keep very good time, anyway. I'd gladly swap it for a tach.

Pegscraper, how do you like the Trailtech tach-hour device? The on-line video seems to reveal that it gives a considerably delayed reading, and I wonder if your personal experience confirms that.

I used the tach on my sons TE 450 to find out where my idle speed was. Just ran both bikes next to each other and matched his rpm's by the sound.

Can't say I've noticed any appreciable delay in the readout. The response time of the gauge has 2 settings. IMO digital tachs will never be as easy to read as an analogue gauge and watching a needle swing round but I find the TTO gauge a good compromise and I'm well pleased with it.

I've got one of these on my DR:

Simple installation as it just needs the sensor wire wrapped around the plug lead and its good to go. Hours are displayed all the time until the spark is detected when it switches to a tach. 1 year of service so far and all good.

Only time I use a tach is to set the idle speed. I use an hour meter that has a tach reading. When the bike is off you see hours, when the bike is running you see the tach.

I've got one of the cheap ones off ebay:

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/Gauges-/33672/i.html

Works fine on my 2 stroke. But it does have 1-2 sec lag. It's not good for instantaneous readings, but good to see what your RPM is when shifting, and idle. You wrap the sensor wire around the spark plug wire. It has settings for 2 or 4 stroke. Shows hours when engine off.

BTW, the cheap ones cost around $12-14 US.

The cheap ones are 12-14$ us, they will be very delayed but work for idle speed or to see rpm when cruising, also hour meter seems to work, has counted 60.1 since may...also very difficult to see unsless cruising on steadier ground, the lettering is pretty small, hasnt been affected by water but sitting in the sunlight will make the screen get all funky for a while.......i will probably try the next step better next time i get one
