i am looking for a set of 17 inch wheels and hubs for a 96 fc 501. i would like to use stock brakes and gearing. i just want it to handle a bit better on the road. i am located in seattle, wa, USA. Any ideas?
17 inch rims and sportbike tires are nice but along with associated front brake/rotor upgrade expect the total upgrade package to cost a big chunk of change.
Another viable and significantly less expensive option is to pull the knobbies and just put some dual-sport street tires on your stock rims. Your tire sizes are probably 90/90/21 front and 120/80/18 rear. Consider the following tire options...
thought about it also. any idea on the handling with that though? sounds like i wouldn't have alot of cornering grip or stability. sounds like a heavy handleing option. i was also throwing around the idea of relacing stock hubs to 18 inch rims on both sides. it would give me alot more tire options as the rear is 19 inch now, and that really limits things.
Riders race bikes running 21/18 inch street tires in the supermoto sportsman class with great success. They go almost as fast as the riders on 17's with slicks. No handling, grip or stability issues to speak of. The only shortcoming will be the modest braking action from the smaller dirt oriented front brake.
