I love my 04 FS650 'berg & seems to me that they would make a great ultralight supermono track bike (sportsbike) with the right gearing (not racing).
I know that such things exist, & I would aim to keep the motor, frame & swingarm, but can anyone offer advice on all other components (susp, wheels etc) - or would it just be easier to put the 650 motor into a donor frame ? any ideas ? I was thinking of maybe an aprilia RS250. any input - even if I am talking rubbish - is very much appreciated. THANKS. Ian

welcome to UHE documented. you'll probably find all the info on it here you'll ever need!

we have a resident roadracer in "DR_C". you can check out his gallery and get a lot of info by going into his profile and then looking at all his previous posts.

there has been one in the UK as well and i think he did use the original frame for that. can't remember the name but i would suggest that again you go into gallery and i would work in reverse order alphabetically. he has a lower name and lots of photos of it there.

regards

Hi Documented!
I hope I have informed you well through our ongoing private email conversation? As the topic is rather "narrow" and propably not interesting to the vast majority of this forum, I´ll leave this public thread right here. :?:

BTW: NWS also manufactured a very nice Minimono with 650-propulsion. They were lacking a good Husaberg mechanic in the team, so all the problems they faced with the motor, made them sadly enough "never to use that piece of sh*t again"! :(

Hi - yes that was all vey useful - thanks a lot; I am getting my ideas slowly sorted as to the best way to go for a 650- based track bike, which is maybe not as super-critical as for a race bike - & I took on board your advice about keeping it light + simple - which is very much what I wanted anyway.
all the best & thanks. ian. documented

RE: Dr C documented

Im sure you could maybe find a Tigcraft frame or rolling chassis for not huge bucks. Dr C is that a MR H rs250 chassis in the top pic?
My father is good freinds with Derrick Chitenden (Hejira racing developments those in supermono will know the name) and i used to revel in the quality and ingunity that the supermono boys(and girls) had. The last bike i thinbk i saw at Derricks was his latest Full carbon chassis, (carbon wheels, carbon frame, carbon swing arm) I would think on the right gearing a 650 berg motor would be very good. Would the MX chassis not be a little flexiable for a road racer?

RE: Dr C documented

Hi Daz!
Yes that is a "GP-style" Honda RS250 chassie from 1999. Hejira is well known to us for supplying chassis in the early 90s. Does he have a website up? I usually gear mine with 16/36. The gearbox has the MX 6th gear and a lower 5th from Folan, so it is very tight and useful. I would also think the MX chassie would be a bit too flexible, but for club-racing and trackdays surely quite OK. I used a 650-motard in the series 2002, and it was very fun. Crawling around on the bike like a monkey, being a king in the wet and getting the spectators attention! :D But the straights were not so fun... :(

RE: Dr C documented

The Berg racer was not mine but a guy called Mike Smith from Yeovil in Somerset.

His gallery is here:

I used to contact him through his wife Val who works for Talon Wheels in Yeovil. I don't think they run the Berg any more. I nearly bought it myself so they may well have it or bits still for sale.

I don't want to cast aspersions here but if they're the ones I'm thinking of, they had plenty of berg expertise available to them but they ignored it thinking they knew better - even when they had been warned

IIRC, as a result they did quite a lot of damage to the berg engine's reputation in the UK supermono scene, which was a shame.

As we all know, it is an excellent engine when looked after properly

I thought it was a RS chassis, Derek is still pootling around he has a big old shed at his house, its like an alladins cave, He has an Original 90's YZR500 bigbang GP bke in there  along with more carbon parts then you can shake a stick at. He made a lot of custom parts for my olld TLR (i used to race in the "sound of thunder") I think his son does alot of the work now, I dont think they have a website, i will ask though.

Let´s say like this: I know the background but I chose to express myself less direct than you, Simon. :)
