yesterday i rode my 99 fe 600 for near 700 km (435 ml) straight from one town to the other on the highway every thing was going fine until about half an hour from my destination the bike dies completely and i have no compression so anyway long story short my right hand side exhaust valve is stuck open .
What i want to know is

(A) will the valve be bent..?
(B) why would the valve stick open
(C) how do i unstick it with out removing the head cause im pov and cant afford stuff

cheers doug

ok you will have to take the head off. it isn't an expensive job in itself. i re-use headsgaskets so it's no big deal. you can continue with the same oile seals as long as you gon't catch them.

regarding valve guide oil seals. i think you'll find that after a few years use the seals won't rip when you pull the valve through as they've hardened.

that just leaves the seal on the valvfe that you're pulling out.....cross your fingers!

you will have to tap this out yet you mustn't burr the top of the valve over. that will be VERY, VERY hard to do. i would put a P120 grinderette disc around the outside or one of the more modern spinning abrasive weapons.

then you'll have to hammer it through. a soft copper hammer and then a well fitting drift that hits it square.

the valve will need spinning up in a drill and you should smear a peice of P600 wet 'n dry in a mixture of parrafin and oil and let it run up and down the stem until like a babies bum.

the guide will look ok and there will be wear but all that is something you have got to close your mind to if you are brassic at present.

check the wear and tolerance limits against the workshop manual.

hope this helps

44014,
Question A...probably
Question B...refer to question A

Ok i removed the head yederday and found the valve to be in good order what i did find was very messy tho
It appears that the right side exhaust valve , valve stem seal has dissapeared and a thick layer of carbon inside the the top of the head (around exhaust valve springs)
It appears the valve has hit the piston but not hard at all as the carbon has not been chipped off merely discoloured from touching .
So it seems that with the missing valve stem seal it has allowed exhaust gases to flow up the valve stem bringing with it carbon and jam the valve causing it to stick open .

any theories guys..? remembering the bike had just run for 7 hours straight with out once stopping

cheers doug

You are lucky to have piston to valve contact and suffer no valve damage. It would seem that there must be excessive clearance between the valve and guide to have such heavy deposits in the guide and head.....nsman

new guide and seals. have the exhaust valve kissed at the engine shop. if that's all it needs they've saved you a valve. if not-you need a valve.

i would check the other valve while you're there.

that seems to be the cheap option. cross your fingers that the cam chain wasn't weakened etc etc.

your call but the above seems to be the minimum way out.

regards

Taffy
