Boys I need some suggestions for the good of society. '06 FE 550, Lt fork compression holder is not budging. I've tried hand ratchet, hand impact driver, pneumatic impact gun, aero kroil, mapp gas torch. I'm out of ideas.

The right one came off fairly easily so at least I think I know what I'm doing here but the left one is being a PITA.

Thoughts, suggestions.?

TIA
Mike

I stood my forks upside down and filled the little well around the compression with penetrating oil and let it sit for a week. Then hit it with an impact gun with a ground down socket. I'm not sure if the oil even penetrates as there is a o ring seal but it worked for me.

Yep did exactly as you describe less the week wait time. And yes you're right there is an o ring in there.

No telling what the PO did with these forks. I'm going to beat and heat some more. I'm afraid the holder is going to get trashed, no doubt not the first one to experience this. Everything was going swimmingly up to this point such a shame. Gonna be 60 degrees here tomorrow was gonna be the maiden voyage after weeks of fiddling on this thing. Guess that's gonna have to wait for another day.

put a thin walled socket over the holder and hit it inward a few times

this bends the thin alloy flange and relives the tension

it won't help if the threads are seized though

Bushy, thanks mate. I managed to get her free but just short of using a cold chisel and drilling hammer. At first site of it not budging I knew I was in for a small mechanical adventure. She's holding oil so I didn't booger the o-rings apparently, whoray for me. But I'll get a spare ordered up all the same.

At the time I just wanted to be able to shove it out the bay as it was occupying the misses covered, heated parking spot. Momma no likely cold car in the mornings. In the end all is good for now, just some momentary anxiety.

So here's a question of opinion, the PO was running without the rubber plugs in the compression holders. What say you? What is the popular perspective here with or without? I'm thinking with.

TIA

most people just chuck em

If you ride a lot of salty mud prolly leave them in but then water can get trapped in there

I pulled mine and just put a smear of waterproof grease in them. Collects lots of dirt but cleans out easily with brake cleaner when the time comes.

As Bushie sais, HIT IT, it's more important than any rust spray !
I've suffered a lot with those busters !!
Good luck
