The bike is an '05 FS650E with approx. 10 hrs.

On pavement, when launching a bit more aggressively than normal (little more throttle and a bit of clutch slip) I'm hearing a brief sort of screeching/squealing noise seemingly from the RHS of the motor. I'm not sure exactly where from as it's hard to pinpoint while doing this of course.

The bike otherwise starts fine, runs fine, revs fine and pulls hard with no other suspicious noises apparent.

Any suggestions as to what it might be, and whether it's cause for concern?

Thanks,
-Mike

Sounds like clutch slip to me. Might want to check. Does it do it all the time?

Try changing the oil, or using a different brand. Mine does it too occasionally under the same circumstances that you describe. I don't think the clutch is slipping, it grabs and pulls like normal. It's almost like some type of harmonic vibration or something. My KTM does the exact same thing, and I am still on the original plates after 4 years, so I don't think it's any harm.

I *think* more when cold, but haven't had a chance yet to really test that. I considered it might be clutch slip (as it happens when I'm intentionally slipping the clutch of course), but I've never heard that sort of noise on any other bike I've owned. Also - wouldn't the noise originate from the LHS of the motor?

That noise is emitted from my bikes occasionally. I've heard one guy say the changing to Motorex got rid of the noise. Every bike I've ridden over the tast 5 years has done it, sometimes cold, sometimes when the bike is extremely hot and I'm working the clutch hard in tight sections. I've never had trouble or failure beyond the noise with my clutches.

Is there any metal on the magnet?

Any abnormal sludge (ie clutch material ) in the oil?

If not I wouldn't worry about it. I'd venture to say that this is normal.

Thanks guys for the replies, I'm breathing a bit easier now ;)

Motorex is a brand of oil? I'm using Amsoil now and have changed the oil and filter twice since new (at about 1hr and again at about 3.5hrs) and am planning on changing it again this weekend.

There was a bit of metal on the magnet (less so at the second change), but I don't think there was an unusal amount for a brand new bike. The oil hasn't seemed at all sludgy when draining - a bit dark maybe but the Amsoil seems fairly dark to start with so...

I'll maybe try another brand of oil on the next change and see if that makes a difference, otherwise I'll stop worrying unless someone suggests anything serious or the symptoms change for the worse.

Thanks again,
-Mike

My 501 got worse and worse until eventually it was doing it all the time.
The 99% cure was as follows.

Remove clutch case and basket and examine cork plates and metal spacers. In my case the first cork had locked solid to the metal spacer and the second cork had obviously been getting stuck.
I polished the two metal spacers, soaked them in engine oil. Cleaned the two cork plates and soaked them also. Then distributed them within the middle of the clutch assembly bringing the swapped ones to the front.
Result....
In the last 50 hrs of riding, it did it once for about half a second. Thats all.

Hope this helps

Ady
PS. There are many previous posts on this.

Thanks Ady :)

I did try a search first, but I guess I didn't select the right key words.

Most of them seem to do it sooner or later. I have had good luck removing the plates, inspecting them and then soaking them over night in motor oil. I have heard of people bungy cording there clutch levers over night to let the oil get between the plates for a good soak as well.
