While working on my brothers forks we thought we sholud grease the steering head bearings, but we cant get the stem out? From what i read the stem is pressed on earlier models, but in the manualt it says that it should be enough to tap the lower clamp lightly and the stem should come out.

Whats the deal here?

Are you trying to get the stem out of the lower clamp or out of the bike ? There's a nut underneath the lower triple clamp that holds the stem in place. It needs to be removed to take the stem out of the clamp. If you're trying to get the whole lower clamp including stem out of the bike, remove the top triple clamp & hit it with a soft mallet. They get stuck with washing & slight corrosion so you night need to give it a few good whacks. Mine were seized on my FE550 with 20hrs on the bike.

wait, after you remove the top triple clamp, there's a dust cover there with some type of fastener on top (not sure what it's called) that is screwed onto the stem. that should be removed as well. take a flat head screw driver to one of the grooves and tap lightly with the palm of your hand to unscrew--it shouldn't be tight. then i think you can push the stem out the bottom.

We have removed everything but the stem itself, gave it a few good whacks but it didnt budge. Put it back together, there was really nothing wrong, it was just irritaiting not to be able to get it out. Proboblary we will try to heat it and press it out next time we take it apart!
