try a quality locksmith , show him the bike and the lock in question .

have no faith in the steering lock for security , low life will snatch it :hiding:

I was perusing mine while I was greasing the head bearing this year and thought it looked like a fine spot for a recessed grease zerk-maybe next winter.

Does any one know how to get a key for my 97 fe-400 steering lock.

I am looking for the same. I had my frame at a locksmiths for 4 days and he was not able to figure it out. In the end he told me it was damaged (which I think may have been due to his attempts to pick it) and I started trying to buy I whole new tumbler. I had to drill the old one out (VERY CAREFULLY) and get a new one. Dan from MotoExotica http://www.motoxotica.com/ sent me one for a VOR that is by the same manufacturer (IZOD or something like that) for free (Dan rocks!) because he didn't know if it would fit. I almost got it to work (it needed some modification), but the pin that sits on the end of the lock was not long enough so the whole chamber slid in and out of the frame rather easily. Not good at high speeds if your stearing column locks up. I tryed to replace this pin, that is when things went sour. The whole tumber fell apart when I over rotated the tumber and the pins all fell out. DAMN!

If you know the key code (a four digit number) you should be able to get a key cut fairly simply, or as stated find a capable locksmith that will not damage the lock.

I called D&H Cycles http://www.dhcycles.net/ (sorry Dan, only this once I promise) and he said he can get whole replacements for $33 and change. You might just want to replace the whole lock as the locksmith in my area wanted $45 just to pick the lock and another $10 to make a key for it, (which failed anyhoo).

Hope this helps

Hummm ... that is not a bad idea. Since I will not be DS'ing this as much as I wanted orignially (damn crazy maintainance schecule) maybe I don't need this lock.

The steering lock is totally ridicoulus. The original one broke in moving the bike in the garage. Next lock broke when I forgot to unlock it. And I'm not that big and strong. The lock would possibly stop small children but I doubt they would be able to start it. If only they would have chosen a Neimann lock, not exceedingly strong as a theft deterrent but still many times better than the joke they fitted.
For a while I was considering the lock as a good pint to connect the motor breather hose! Woud keep the steering bearings lubricated always.

I am getting the distinct impression changing this lock out is more trouble than it's worth...

One less thing to do.

What a damn fine idea - happen to have a buddy who is one.

Must avoid mental ruts....
