Greetings all,
I am new to here and new to Husabergs (just bought a 04 FE450). This is the most wicked registerable bike I have ridden.
Heres the deal, I cant take my Husa for a ride till I fix the missus bike (financial sponsor of my new bike !). Her bike is a KTM 400SC 1996 model and I think the Stator (SEM) is buggered. Has had very little spark for a while, now no spark at all. I have been told that this stator ( KTM Part number 580.31.002.050)
is also used on some early Husa's.
I am no electrician but I have tested the resistances and found:
red - green 0 OHMs
red - black 0 OHMs
green - black 23.5 OHMs
yellow - blue 0.r OHMs
Does the above mean the stator is buggered??
Are these things available, or repairable?
Do any of the Aussies on here know of a local place to get a repair/ spare. I am in Northern NSW Australia.
Additionally, the magnets are all still in place, but the stuff they are glued in with is a bit chipped and ratty looking. Is this likely to be an issue also?
Any info will be appreciated.
cheers

Contact UHE member SPARKS, he is the SEM go to guy here at the site. You can send your stuff to him and he will test it and then do a rewind if required. Lot's folks on this site have used him, including me, with great success.

somewhere in the owners doc the ohm values will stated.
i got my stator exchanged from a company in victoria.
from what i hear they still only last about the same as the genuine sem unit, probably about 150 engine hours.
they charged me about $380 aus about 2-3 years ago.
mine has done about 100 hrs since ,so i'm all ears to hear how the sparks stator holds up over time.
how many hours has everyone got on their sparks stators?
are they a 100% cure?
..weed..

Hi Weed,

I don't think any body can say anything is 100% cured there are to many variables. It would be interesting though to see what sort of hours people have got on my rewound units.
As for reliability up to press I am nearly up to 1300 rewound units but that's over a few years and not all for Husaberg there is KTM Husky VOR and ATK just to mention a few that used the SEM ignition.
From memory I have had five units returned but three of thee were mechanically damaged as opposed to electrical failure, I would say that is a fairly good pass rate.

Sparks.

I had a SCR rewind prior to Spark's job and it lasted about 30 hours only, and that included a warranty claim for the lighting coil that didn't work when it came back the first time, very disappointing for the money. I also noticed that Spark's rewind resulted in xcrisper performance and better starting. In my experience definitely better than the SCR job from Geelong. I seem to recall another company in Oz does rewids too, SA I think. Betta Electrical?

good to hear from you sparks
i'm not trying to dig any dirt up on you sparks.
in fact i was going to buy one off you next time anyway.
i'm sure you would back your workmanship.
it would be good advertisment for you if people out there know that they could get more hours out of your stators than genuine or others.
just for intest sake,do you use a bigger dia wire that takes longer to corode though or better quality wire or is it in the sealing of the unit so that the moisture can't get to the wires?
does anyone in australia stock your stators sparks?
..weed..

Yeah Id certainly be keen to get hold of one. I think I read somewhere that Sparks has a relative here in Australia who could on sell them. Is this the case? What would the cost be??
cheers

Stator wows

Gday,
I have just heard back from a company in Aus who sell direct replacements for SEM stators. Hopefully this part is interchangable with KTM Part no: 580.31.002.050.

I am hoping that this is a cheaper fix for my wifes KTM LC4 ($370).

Has anyone out there used these stators (I have included pics).

Is there any issues with the stator not being enclosed in a heap of plastic/epoxy?

Cheers

Hi Weed,

I think it is the way I write things, some times doesn't quiet sound how it should and my sound like i'm having a dig which was not intended.
Regarding the wire it is the same diameter but the over all diameter is slightly larger due to the enamel covering being slightly thicker, and the temp rating is 200C which I think if the engine ever got that high it would be only the stator that would be still serviceable.
After winding the coils they are impregnated with baking varnish and cooked in the oven for three hours so nothing can get in moisture wise.
Before applying the red sealing compound the coils are covered in a moisture repelling compound so moisture getting in is not a real issue.
My brother in law lives in Glen Haven near Sydney, but the problem is trying to find enough duff stators to rewind to send to him. With the problem they have you would think there would be buckets of them but as most people think they can not be rewound they just get chucked in the bin.

Regards

Sparks.

Hi Pat,

This is a stator we don't talk much about, I have had one in and I'm a little concerned about some of the voltages it puts out.
The original stators run a diode the stop it over voltageing to the cdi this one doesn't.

RE: Re: Stator wows

i hold sparks stators if anyone needs one. no extra post to australian UHE members! what you see is what it costs!
