Has anyone tried following the instructions in the owners manual for stator life? The manual for my '99 FE400E states on page 48, which is a wiring diagram page "Note! The alternator delivers 70W in each of the yellow wires. Only one of these is connected from the factory. Both wires only to be connected whenever in a need of more than 70W though this creates more heat which causes a higher risk of failure to the alternator."

I just noticed this after I lost my second stator. And, both yellow wires were always hooked up, even from the factory. Has anyone run with one yellow wire disconnected, and has their stator lived longer - like forever, as you would expect from an $8,000 bike?

The person i bought my 98 from followed this advise- and only replaced the stator once after five years- right before i bought it- i think mine would have lasted longer had it not come loose inside the flywheel. he even mentioned it to me when i bought it.

however, he said you would need it connected to power the headlight- but it always worked for me.

I found out the reason mine came loose was because it was never seated properly with the allingment bushing within the mounting holes- when it vibrated enough to slip that was all she wrote. I really should have paid more attention :(

Stator failure with an inactive charging / lighting system is still very common among SEM units.

Dale, that's awful news! Certainly, whether a stator lasts 2 or 5 years depends on how much the bike is ridden, and how hot the stator can get. My last (second) failure occurred after a 20 minute run down a paved road at high speed. The headlight was on for safety, creating need for more electrons. I parked it, ate lunch, and it didn't run again.

By the way, I just added a stator vent system. It pulls air through a small K&N, through the housing, then into the carb housing that is part of my Keihin setup. KTM uses this port for crankcase venting, it makes a nifty airstream source for drawing air through the housing. I'll take some photos and post them.
