Okay,
I am not clear on something. On my 01 fx 470, the auto decomp, which engages when the kickstarter comes all the way up, is working fine. Is this the same decompression device that may need modifying on some bikes to allow for electric starting to happen?
I have installed a starter off of a 02 Yamaha R-6. Instead of modifying the bracket and all, I just switched the end cap of the starters, and it was a done deal, perfect fit of course.
My starter is spinning thru and not fully engaging the sprague? It grabs some, but mostly not. I am now ready to replace that part, the sprague? I suppose. I will also be ordering the more powerful battery.
After my first 100 miles on this bike, I was pleasantly surprised at the performance, and really like it. It is getting 50 m.p.g. Sweet.....I have ordered my blinkers and will soon be making my trip to the motor vehicle inspection station to get my inspection and then my coveted license plate.....I borrowed a tag for the first 100 mile ride !!!!!!
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
The bike starts good when hot, but is a bear when cold. I know I may still have to kick it cold, but after that, I want to use the button. As it is, the button just makes really annoying sounds !!!!!!!

hot starting....

No, it does not ever work. But kickstarting it is easy hot, compared to cold......

The decompression device that you speak of sits in the camshaft. See the following link.

If and when you order the sprag, try to order from a knowledgeable source. There was an update in 02 and you may need to get the matching gear as well. You may want to try to modify the sprag as taffy suggested first.

I rode with a friend a few weeks ago....

I rode with a friend a few weeks ago who has a 2000 501. He could start it cold with the electric start.....but his method was to use the manual decompression release to help get the thing spinning, then release it, then pull it again, etc....He got it started in maybe 30 seconds, and it was about 39 degrees, F.....we had ice on our seats that morning.....I am not opposed to using this method if it simplifies anything. I try to do it now, but the thing just will not hang on to the starting gear it seems.
I also just discovered that I do already have the YTZ7S battery...it must be old, or just bad. I certainly do not have this special charged spoken of elsewhere...I use a 1-2 amp battery tender........were in the hell do I get this special charger? Even after my battery has been on a charger, it will not spin the engine very long.......(sigh).....

I always use the manual decompressor to get it spinning on all of my pre 09 bikes. Seems to save wear and tear on the sprag.

more than likely you will need to change the inner part of the starter sprague. after a while, the oval shaped bearings will wear and not grip the outer part. some (including me ) have tried a fix by putting in a stronger spring around these bearings (i used a 40mm fork seal spring i had laying around). it helped, but on my 650, the new inner was the solution.
you will have to remove the clutch (and mark your gears for proper reassembly) to get to it, but it should solve your problem.

Delmas,

I would like to also add, to be sure and have the motor set on TDC on the compression stroke. This was a painful lesson of experience when I replace the sprague on my 01 501. Otherwise the cam gear will jump.

Sounds like a plan.....

Ok guys,
I am good with replacing that inner gear. Just how in the heck do I get a replacement gear, and or spring?
...Good advice on the TDC.....Always a good idea to do that when disassembling any engine comoponent, I guess.......
Thanks for your advice and I will move forward with it.....

TDC. Just make sure the 3 dots are lined up on the crank and primary gears. you will see them when the clutch cover is off.

Hey Berger,

My 01 doesn't have the dots!! So that made it even more painful when I messed up b/c you have to find the orientation from the woodruff key, which means you have to pull both the primary nut, and the counter balancer nut to find alignment. Hard lesson for sure.

Mine was one of the first 01's delivered, so maybe the later 01's came with the dots that all of the 02's on had.
