A while back I heard some say the 04 starters would fit the older bikes, others said they wont fit. I never heard from anyone who tried the starter and gave a definite answer. So I will ask the question. Will the 2004 450 and 650 starters fit older husabergs? I have my fingers crossed. My 01 650 would be awesome with ktm like starting. Any information appreciated.

We have been told by the Husaberg importer in Australia that they will fit. I have also been told by my local dealer that they have sold the new starter for fitting to older bikes.

In addition to the starter you also need the new mounting bracket at the rear of the starter.

Scully was going to fit the new starter but none were in stock and he got tired of waiting, he ended up buying a second hand starter on ebay that is basically the same as his existing starter.

So we know they will fit but don't yet know how much of a benefit they deliver.

Thanks for the reply. Well you are right How much of a benefit would it be? If the new bikes start quickly and consistantly on the e-start then I for one would be very interested. The big problem here in the US is getting the parts. I dont want to wait forever.

The auto decomp for the 04 model has been improved although I don't know what the changes are.

I guess I am a little concerned wether the 03 and older decomp and sprague clutch combination will allow a benefit from the bigger starter.

We'll just have to wait and hope someone lets us know.

Wow, I got ro ride a 2004 fe 550 the other day. very nice. I am blown away at the way it starts instantly on the button. No hesitation or slow turning just bang it is running. I want this for my 2001 fx-650

Hello

I talked with one guy during the weekend and he had changed the starter AND battery to 2004 mod, on a 2002 mod 650. I under stand that the new starter needed a some kind of distance sleeve or washers on the starter mounting, and he got that "bit" from the dealer. And the new starter motor was starting the engine easily. The prize was 2000 Nok = 290USD, if that prize included the battery, he did not say. But he was happy with the result.

Perhaps Dale in conjunction with BMG could provide us with the nessasary part #'s and BMG could advise us if these parts would be readily available.

It would sure make a lot of North American Berg owners very happy!

Per the Husaberg literature the 550 and 650 got a different starter than the 450. Questions:

Is the 04 450 starter different than the 03 starters?

Is the 04 550/650 starter much different than the 04 450 starter?

Can you use a 04 550/650 starter and get really good results on a 01-03 400/470/501?

Would using an 04 starter nullify any 01-03 auto decompression concerns.

I still wonder if the bigger battery is all we need.
My 2002 fx470 Estarts bang right now if I just
put a small battery charger on it while starting.
Where do they fit it?There isn't much extra room.

The Yuasa YTZ7S is not any bigger just better. After installing this battery in my 01 470fx it actually turned the motor over a couple of times before giving up. Your 02 470 probably has good autdecompression lift amd may benefit from just the battery upgrade. Consider yourself lucky as you have the right spec "bits" ( I've been here too long as I am starting to speak real english). Not to be confused with Taffy's english!
When I can understand him I will know that I have arrived.

Those batteries are pretty small.Maybe fitting an
extra one wired in parallel would do the trick?

There is a member but I can't remember his name, that did a dual battery set up to a 03 650 I think. A picture was in his gallery but no posts about it. The battery was located under the seat as on the pre 01 bikes. I had the idea that if the battery box from a 2000 could be found it might make a sanitary dual battery installation. Not to mention that the additional battery would also be bigger. The 2000 bikes had the new generation frame but the old motor so getting a battery box out of one of these seemed like it would be perfect! I contacted Dan at Motoxotica but none were to had from BMG.

A bigger battery is a must.Cranking amps vs amp draw
of the starter. The voltage drop on the battery during
starting is incredible. The weak charging system hardly
has time to charge the battery back up during rides.
A battery tender in the garage will probably also be needed.
I will have to do some more testing and get some battery specs
before I start looking for a box/mount for it.

I did a little looking and found the picture.

It was in Scully's gallery. Maybe he can give us some infofmation on how this is working.
