I need help from the Guru's. My starter motor only works sometimes. Other times it is as dead as anything ' meaning nothing happens when I touch the e-starter. If I move the kick starter a bit or put the bike in gear and move it forward and back then she starts with the E-starter. I have had the starter tested (all OK), and I have stripped the switch and everything seems Ok. When the starter does work it works perfectly and she starts immediatly. When it doesn't work there is nothing, it does not even turn.
What else can I check?

Lets start at the beginning. Is your battery original? Do you keep the battery plugged into a charger when the bike is not in use?

Good day Husabutt

Yes my battery is original and yes I do keep it on charge/tender when not in use,(during the week). On last Saturdays ride it must have happened about 5 or 6 times. Press the E-starter and nothing. Put in gear, wiggle bike back & forth, kick kickstarter, hit E-starter and she starts. The next time I stop, I kill the engine and when I touch the starter button to start she starts immediatly.

As your bike is now three years old the battery is the very first thing that comes to mind. I have had batteries test at 13.0 volts and still not be able to turn the starter. A regular Battery Tender does not fully charge the YTZ7S battery to the required 13.5 volts. I would start with a fresh battery and use a Optimate III charger or an equivalent five step charger. By moving the kickstarter and wiggling the bike back and forth in gear you may have moved the piston just beyond the compression stroke therefore not requiring as much cranking amps and allowing the piston to get a good run at the compression stroke.

You might check the battery cables at both ends and from the relay to the starter to make sure they are tight.

Check out the carbon brushes in side the motor, the symptom you are experiencing is typical worn brushes. If they are not making contact with the com nothing will happen, and by putting it in gear and moving it backwards rotates the starter motor and thus the brushes could be just making contact for it to opperate.

Sparks.

I don't know if this is the case cause sometimes it starts 100% and other times nothing. Not even a sound. Almost as if it is not getting power/current to turn the starter.

I had the starter out and sent it to a specialist starter repair shop and there findings are that there is nothing wrong with the starter. I also opened the starter up, the bushes look perfect and have plenty of "travel" in them yet.

I am also using the C-TEK charger.

I will check this weekend iif I have power/current on the starter when it happens. I suspect that I have a short somewhere on the harness running to the E-button.
I will report back.

If there is no sound at all, not even of a relay clicking then I'd suspect the starter button itself. Heavy duty washing can corrode electrical connections in switches for example.

Try a jumper wire across the starter relay and see what happens.

Good day gents

I have found my starting problems. I found a wire broken off in one of the connectors behind the headlight. It was behind the little bracket that holds the Female parts of the plastic connectors.

The wire was broken off inside the connector which explains the intermittent starting. When I moved the kickstarter, what I was in fact doing was moving the handle bars which made the loose wire make contact. (If I moved the bars to the right, then she started.) I resoldered the wire to the connector (with great trouble) and bobs your uncle no more issues!

Thanks again for all the advice offered, thankfully it was nothing major.

Good find. Intermittant electrical problems are such a pain. I use either a silicone grease or a product we get downunder called Lanotec which is a grease/lubricant extracted from wool to lube all of my electrical connectors. This does two things, you can pull them apart easier later, and it limits the entry of moisture and dirt and therefore reduces corrosion whaich helps maintain electrical properties and also makes it possible to disassemble later.

Kicking this topic for my question:

Sometime's my FE400 '03 starter relay is just clicking when i push my Estart button.
I clicks one time. When I turn my key to 'off' and then to 'on' again it will click again but then noting.
When i grab my starter relay and just move it around a bit (or only just touching it) 48 of 50 time's it will start on the E-starter.
Should I replace my starter relay?

If your battery is two years or older and you have not always kept it on a charger when not in use it could just be the battery. I had a battery measure just fine at almost 13 volts but under the load of the starter it would not engage the starter relay and just clicked. My experience is that if the starter relay goes out it will not click or turn the starter motor.

Ok, will try another battery.
Somewhere in my cable-loom there is leaking power away. I am always measuring about 0,5 amp's leak??

Sorry for my weak english

Update:
I checked my wiring, and my + wire from my battery was haning loose..

bolted it on and my berg starts always now :D
