Starter Motor

Is there an equivalent/upgrade KTM item for an 02 650 starter motor. Mine is fried and and would like to replace by weekend. I have a local KTM dealer but they are not very helpfull with cross matching parts (took me 20 minutes to convince them the oil filter is the same!!).

If not, is there an updated 'berg motor that I should go for?

Any help would be grateful. Thx in advance.

I've called DCR and they recommended the 05 starter @ Ã‚Â£105 +vat.
Does this sound resonable or would I be better looking for the equivalent KTM starter?
Also is the CBR6 F4 a straight replacement or would I have to do some fettlin to get it to fit?

it probably is the same starter motor.

the cbr6 motor does fit but i'm sure something needs a bit of moding.
check out the owners doc and do a search as i've seen it mentioned somewhere here.

checked the doc, it says "Starter motor: CBR 600 F4 starter motor. Splines are the same and does the job for a fraction of the cost (Scully)."

he's not about that much now he's gone all reliable on us! (LOL!!!).

go to members list, alphabetical, go to S - you know the rest! he's very helpful.

also do a search on it by chucking in 'scully' as the author and try different words.

You'll need the starter motor bracket to fit this larger starter motor.
part #820.40.002.000 (bracket electric starter 550/650)

Hi, any update on this mate? I'm trying to get a bigger starter motor for mine too - I have one that says mitsuba sm13 on it (rather than the sm14 which is std fit at 193mm od) but it is 215 mm od and hits a 'lump' in the engine casing castings and wont go into its little hole... I'm not sure if the sm 13c is theone from cbr600 or something completely different

can anyone help please?

Specifically: I'd like to know the dimensions of the newer 520 starter motor and also that of the cbr 600 F4 which is reputed to fit - in order that I can get the one that just works...

scully started the thread i think and it was VERY long.

why should he reepeat himself if you haven't searched out the thread?

it'll be in electrical and simply going back 2-5 pagfes might be sufficient!

Ok found it - Scully had a cbr sm fitted but he didnt find it the ultimate fix - he also had 24v starting, which worked - I dont really want to go 24v ... the later sm seems like it only a few mm longer and a bit beefier but does not seem to be a 100% guarantee cure all even if its loads money to do. I guess I'd really like to find a much beefier sm that fits -

Hey, whats that bulge in the gearbox casing for and how much can I grind off it???

That for all the feedback guys.
I have ordered an 05 'berg sm (been waiting 2 weeks for it so far!!)

I will let you know the dimensions of the 02 compared to the 05 and also any starting differnces.
