Hi all. You may ahve seen my post about 2 weeks ago regarding being kicked back by my berg resulting in a broken foot. Healing ok which is the good news. Since the incident I decided to upgrade the starter motor to the Mitsuba SM-14 which I got from ebay for less than £10. Also I bought a YTZ7s Yuasa battery and an optimate charger, not so cheap!
Anyway, fitted both within a few hours (the battery had been charging off the bike for 2 days) but still doesn't seem to be turning fast enough to fire the bike up even when warm.
I can start the bike with the kick start within a kick or two which means to me that the bike is set up ok?
Anything I should be looking at now?
Really dissapointed as I thought this would crack it, any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Trevor

the first question i would ask is how good does your autodecomp work? can you kick it thru without hitting a brick wall at tdc? if not, you need to upgrade your decomp with the dutch clog type (>'03). if you can easily kick past tdc, then what bike did your starter come from? i originally used one from a honda f4i and found it turned the engine over too slow. i then tried one from a yam r6 and it is much better. so, evidently not all mitsuba sm-14 starters are created equal.

Hi Ned, On the kick start once it gets to TDC it's very difficult to move it past without using manual decomp.
Dutch clog decomp has not been done to my knowledge, is this a 'cam out' job?
Not sure what the motor came from just used the SM-14 code I saw on a previous thread when I purchased the new one. Is the R6 starter any longer than the standard husaberg unit? The one I have fitted is the same length, only difference being longer mounts where it fixes to the engine, maybe I've got the wrong motor? Do the SM-14 motors come in different sizes then?

Cheers
Trevor

Hi Freaky
i'm in the same boat, bought an R6 motor off ebay then discovered it alreadt had an SM-14 in it. The newer one was half an inch longer but still has only started the bike once and that was with a bit of tickling the manual decomp. Obviously need the newer dutch clog auto decomp as described by Taffy and msome of the others.
With the maual decomp pulled in the tacho registers just over 400 rpm which i'm sure i've read here is enoughto start the bike.
Let me know how you get on with the dutch clog if you do it before me, i'm gonna wait till the winter rebuild as its starting well on the kickstart.

good luck and happy spannering

Hi Plumbbob, I too was planning a winter rebuild as I will have clocked up around 100 hours by then. Looks like a decomp upgrade will be needed too then as your R6 starter sounds like the bigger one and still doesn't work. Mine too starts of the kick start ok 90% of the time but was just hoping to save my left foot from more broken bones.

Cheers.

i had a FS650 i today that the owner could not start.

i did the dutch clog, tappets, a bent pair of 37s and valve seat that was sunk on one side (i'.e nothing at all to do with the two bent valves), atomiser, needle, 40 back to 35PJ, cam timing good, ignition timing corrected, IXU24 and it had a beefy starter and a YTZ7s already.

i'm delighted to say that:

it no longer turns over!

no mate

one polishman who bought a bike off ebay and got caught by the seller. the guy had:

ridden it after he had sold it and damaged the engine
pulled the top off but left a visibly clearly bent pair of inlet valves
couldn't get it running at the point f sale and gave a ******** reason
didn't knock a penny off because the man had travelled £250 in a rental van etc etc.
(part2) and knowig that the guy had a major bill coming due to something that happend on his watch

fleabay....

i'll talk shop offline though sammo.

concerning the sm-14 differences, the only thing is the mounting end and the fact that some are 4 brush and some are two. the rest looks the same, but as sparks has intimated before, some are wound differently. its not something that is visually obvious, but there is, in my case, a big difference in the way it turns over with the yam as opposed to the honda. i have yet to find a way to identify different applications without knowing what it was made for as there are no i.d. marks on them except sm-14.
and if your autodecomp isn't working right, you'll need to fix it before any of these starters will turn it over.

hi Ned
i'll take some comparison shots of the two sm-14 motors as one is definately longer than the other, they both turned the engine over at the same speed with the manual decomp pulled in though.
Any idea how fast yours will turn the engine over on the tacho reading?

regards pbob.

but bob, with the decomp pulled in you can't get a handle on the torque of them? all you got was their 'top speed'?

Taffy

It seems I may have purchased the Honda starter motor judging by the pictures on ebay. Do you think if i buy a Yamaha unit it will be better? Will it give me the extra few revs I need to fire it up?

i thought the whole point was some turn the engine overe faster than others, neither will turn it past TDC without decomp pulled in.
When i get them both on the rolling road i'll post the results
