Is 48/15 normal on a 2001 Fe501e?

I cannot find in the parts and instructions manual anything that says what should be standard on each model.

As I find good opportunities on eBay to replace my sprockets and also experiment with different ratios, what do I need to know about what fits what?

Are all the sprockets for KTM compatible with the later Husabergs? Also what are the different standards regarding them?

Thanks :p

LeFrog,

Indeed the 15/48 combination is standard for that bike and year. If you are thinking of riding some single track out here in the desert, try a 13/48 or 13/50 combination as it will allow you to lug your bike and keep your R's up.

On my bike I would run a 13/51 for more technical riding but I have a 19" rear tire compared to yours at 18".

Regards,

Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking about removing a tooth or two in the front. I found out I already had an Ironman in the back.

Are those the proper specs for the counter sprocket?

go to 14 x 48 and see how that feels. DON't go to 13 x anything because you'll wear awat the rubber strapping that protects the swing arm. OK for a racer but a no-brainer for trail riders. try 14T front first and make your mind up after that. 14 x 50 is the next obvious one but do take into account whether you can move the rear wheel forward enough to get the extra two teeth in. if you have a prerfectly good chain you won't want to have to buy another willya!

Hi LeFrog,

the sprocket shown on your picture is not the right one.
The one you have to use looks from both sides the same.
You can put it on your shaft in both directions.

Actually I ´m riding with 15/50 with a wide ratio transmission for Motocross.
When riding single trails I swap it to 14/50.

But I must admit: I do not like short ratios, ´cos I don´t like shifting all the time

i always ran a 14:48 combo and had no strife. unless you're riding in very snotty, very low speed track this combo works everywhere.

Front Sproket is the same as for a Husky. Use that gearing and just learn to go faster  I used it for everything from bar banging singletrack to WFO sandwashes.

I just want to experiment. Thanks all for the answer. Actually Sprockets Specialists shows you what sprockets from other brands you can use but their site has not been updated for a long time.

Apparently we use the same sprockets as the LC4s...

Hi LeFrog,

As the other posts have stated the 15/48 combination is stock, and is a 3.2:1 ratio. I did some experimenting myself with my 01 based on some information I read regarding chain wheel size and it's effect on the rear suspension. As I understand it, running the largest chain wheels does two things: First as far as the suspension goes, the further you can keep the chain from the swing arm, the less binding will occur when the suspension is at or near it's full deflection. That was the whole idea behind Horst Leitner's chain anti torque device, but, running larger sprokets does not approach anthing like Horst's idea. The second thing the larger chain wheels do, is to have less chain wear, mainly caused when the chain wraps around the front sproket, less bending.

So, I ended up going to a 16/52 combo on my 01 FE501E which is ever so slightly lower gearing 3.25:1. The 16 just fits on the front, you will have to remove just a skosh of the swing arm slider material for it to fit. I've been running this set up on my 01 for sometime. The first set of chain and sprokets lasting about 18 months before I replaced them. Yes, you will have to buy a little longer chain, a 122 or 124 pin (I run a DID 520 VMX) chain, if memory serves. I got my sprokets from sproket specialties, the rear 52 sproket is part # 2914, and I can't find the reciept for the front, but, they sent the right one to me. They are great people to deal with.

You will also have to modify the rear chain slider, as in drill another hole to let it ride lower to accomodate the larger rear sproket.

I like this set up b/c when I go up to the sierra's, tight trails and pretty high altitudes I just put a 15 on the front and that gives me a gear for every situation, 3.46:1 ratio, pretty low.

You might also have to take some ribbing from your friends about that rear sproket though. One of my buddies asked where I got the Doug Domokos rear sproket the first time he saw it! :D

Thanks for all your answer. I'm just going to experiment with 14 teeth in the front. I weigh over 230lbs and I still have a bit of apprehension charging uphill. There is something that still does not click.
