I rode yesterday with no problems, cleaned her today then started her up to warm, then drop the oil... As you do.
Took the magnetic filings catch plug out to find loads of big bits of metal on her. About 4 large pieces, biggest about 6mm long. Plus of course the usual fine filings. Took the adjacent oil screen out, to find smaller aluminium looking bits on that.
Now, bearing in mind that everything appears to be working fine, there doesn't appear to be any more debri inside (using a torch) and that I did have to change the starter gear about 5 rides ago after it sheared some teeth after a backfire (damn unlucky!) - Should I be splitting my engine to take a look ? I thought I had removed the debri from before. If it is just that, could it have stayed in there this long...?
Tricky One ..
What would you guy's do ?

FE 501 03 Engine standard.

i would service the bike go for a quick ride and check it again if no more metal is evedent then dont worry about it bur just to be sure take your rocker cover off and inspect your roller rockers

cheers doug

thanks Doug
Already taken rocker cover off - no problems.
So I thought i would give her a short ride, if no problems, lean her on her left and pull the magnetic nut, if all ok and no more metal. Presume it was just a bit i must have missed from before.
Big Day Tomorrow...
Will post results.
:?

Tough luck ady! I my self would monitor your oil closely! And listen for a change in the pitch of the husaberg whirling sound. Most likely the metal came from the gear that failed. If you lost the counter shaft bearing liked my bike you'd be seeing a lot more metal. One more thing you can do is remove the clutch side case cover and inspect the reed valve for metal fouling and give the bottom timing chain gear a little wiggle with a larger screw driver. There should be no slop on the gear and bearing. Also remove the timing chain tensionor and see if it extended all the way out?

Thanks for the advice 70marlin
I understand most of what you suggest and think they are all good ideas. However i do find the casings fiddly and never have any luck with the gaskets, so my preferred option would be to monitor the oil as you suggested. Obviously if i hear or feel anything strange on my short ride tomorrow - I will take your further neccessary steps, to find the fault.

Hoping for a happy smiling face tomorrow - will let you know.

Good News & Bad News Really.

Firstly, there is no more metal attaching to the magnetic sump plug. :D
Amazingly, I can find neutral easily now, before it was a nightmare !! :D
Everything seems to be running perfectly......... BUT !! :?
Three times now, i have been out for a short ride, leaned her over and checked and cleaned the magnetic sump plug and the strainer and each time the strainer has small shavings of what appears to be aluminium attached to it.
I presume its aluminium, because its not sticking to the magnet.

I'm now just letting her cool off, and will do the test one more time.
Question: Should i continue to ride her ?
Am i just getting the last remnants of whatever churned around from before, or could i be grinding something away still further ??
It's fair to say, i'm only talking very small amounts of shavings on the strainer, but i've never had anything on it up until this episode.

Any Advice Guy's ?

fear not small aluminium shavings in your husaberg oil strainer are nothing to stress over completey normal keep riding it

cheers doug

(ps) do a search through the old posts and you will find lots of information on this subject

Weh Hey Doug !!
That's excellent news.
On the final test, there was hardly any shavings on the strainer, it's definitely got less and less each time.
My local riding mate, thinks i should split her up anyway, but he doesn't have the advantage of the opinions of you guys on this site.

Still riding perfectly and she's making all the right noises.
If anyone else reading this thread thinks i should split her, please suggest why.
Otherwise, thanks for the help Doug & 70Marlin. :BIG:

Ride On! Most Bergs will give a little aluminum. When you find ferrous metal start to look closer. Till then have a blast.

Ady,
For some of us there is a certain therapeutic value in performing engine disassembly for no reason other than to look at parts that cannot otherwise be seen. You seem rational enough though and I would recommend that you continue riding the bike and stay alert for further symptoms. That makes it 3 to 0 (except for your friends who probably do not own Husabergs).

To most people on this site - i may appear rational.
My wife however may disagree and claims to be a husaberg widow !

[PS. Most of my local mates are on the Husaberg s]
...... Well they are cheaper than the KTM's ...... (Swear word!)

To conclude this thread and hopefully help others.
I ended up taking my bike to the dealer as i had another problem. Whilst he had the casing off he noted one of the clutch (cork) plates was in pieces.
This was obviously the explanation of the metal pieces.
Incidentally, he put a plate in, off the 05 and it didn't work, he had to do it again with an 03 plate. The 05's are a tiny bit thicker..
Happy Days
