I finally got the Husaberg out into the woods today. We started in Peidmont (just north Of Rapid City) To make sure I didn't get cocky, we hit some tight woods (No track), there were as many trees on the ground as standing. I rapidly learned how to cross logs. We then got into Husaberg territory, rocky (double track? more like 4 foot wide single track) with all steep up or down hill, always turning. The 400 was awesome, I love torque!!!!! After about an hour and a half, we we hit a short piece of fire road running into Nemo (a cute little backwoods town) The next 45 minutes was spent on South Dakota trail 89. This is a twisty trail with about a hundred 3 foot rollers, a few good mud puddles, enough rocks to keep you on your toes and even a little bit of ice. Did I forget to mention the scenery that God must have taken a few extra days on? Unfortunately on the trail an ATV rider with us decided to dive of his mount and break a rock with his nose. He wasn't hurt too bad but his ATV had a flat and we decided to take it easy after that. For lunch we stopped at the Sugar shack. A Rider friendly gas stop and restaurant on Rt 385 at the Pennington county line (anyone visiting Sturgis should make the trip out to this little slice of heaven). The cheese burgers were great and we managed to get a little bit of air into the ATV tire. The ride back to the trucks was all fir roads at a moderate pace. Hunting season starts next week and a lot of hunters were out in the woods (no complaining from me, I'll be out there with them next weekend.) It wasn't an exciting end to the ride, but I did get to work on my wheelies much more practice needed). Overall it was a great day, I got to spend time on the Husaberg, and saw some beautiful sites. All this and I got home in time to drink a beer while watching a football game.

speaking of south dakota riding, do you know randy babcock, jeff ecker, or don leonard? mac

Those names sound vaugely familiar. Of course I haven't met more than 12 local riders so far. I've ridden with some military members and a guy named Mike Hanson. I'm joining the local off-road riders club at their first meeting next week. Hopefully I'll meet them there.

Brian,
great stuff !

I have not been riding bike in the woods there, but on the roads yes.
As You described, the place is beautiful.
I lived there 84-85 one year (high school) so if You know any local graduated from Stevens 85, ask if they know the quiet Finn... I was very shy boy....

later been there on HD, from Dallas to Sturgis twice, and I can tell all the roads from Badlands to Crazy Horse are spectacular....

There is my ribbon on top of Bear Butte...

Ride on Brian , and salute to all !

Brian,

Every year on memorial day weekend my wifes fam and relatives rents a cabin at Nemo in the Hills to go riding. I think that its my favorite vacation each year. I'm the only one with a berg in the group. We ride the centennial trail there and anything else that we can get our bikes on. Its really a beautiful place.

littleyellowboat,
Hopefully We'll see each other out on the trails. About 20 miles out towards the badlands is Farmingdale. It's a fun place to go and play around. No real trails just a lot oh small tracks and some serious jumps. If you'ld like we could settup a ride.
