I went road riding with my friend who has a sports bike last night and trashed my enduro tyres as you might imagine. they tend to wear a bit fast on tarmac! anyway, i've decided i need some SM wheels. However, because i like to be a bit different, i'd like to try and get some sports bike alloy wheels to fit. it will only be for road use so they won't crack. i know it will involve a fair bit of machining and fettling and won't be cheap but
has anyone attempted this on a berg or should i just give up now?

I've seen lots of Husabergs with alloy wheels from older CBRs and other.
If you are not afraid of some machining just go ahead

If you want you can try to get your hands on wheels from the KTM Duke. They will be easier to get to fit.

what do you do about the drive sprocket being on the wrong side if using duke wheels, just turn the wheel round? are they symetrical? All help appreciated. I could just get spoked wheels but everyone has them.

Quite a few have done..in fact if you do a thread search you should find a thread all about it and I believe there are pics in gallery

I wouldn't give up now. There has been a fair bit about this in the past in these theads:
Thread on cast wheels #1 - see end
Thread on cast wheels #2
Thread on cast wheels #3
Thread on cast wheels #4
Thread on cast wheels #5
Thread on cast wheels #6

If you click on Forums in the column at the left of the screen there is a link in blue up the top of the screen called Search. I searched for the word "cast" in all forums, categories & posts to get the ones above. There may be a couple of others buried in there if you search for other words. Be patient. I think most of what you are after is there somewhere.

Both Vegard and my Galleries (again in the column on the left) have pix of bikes with sports bike wheels on them. There are also others - my apologies to those I forgot.

I fitted mine myself & am happy to help if I can.
