Hey guys,

Want to do an SM upgrade to my 08FE450. I love where the stock gearing is at i think I top out right around 90-100 and I wanted to know what primary and driven sprockets I will need if I switch to 17" wheels. I also wanted to know what other associated parts i will need i am buying assembeled wheels with rotors and sprocket attached. Do i need a different kickstand? I know I will need a longer chain, and I was wondering if a diffrent chain guide was also necessary. Anyhow that is already a lot of questions so I will stop there for now. ANy help will be strongly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Zach, on my 08FS650E I'm running 15:38. Pulls HARD (front comes up on power 1-4th) and tops out at ~200kph (130ish mph). You might want another couple of teeth on the rear or one less on the front since your 450 makes less torque than a 650. I'd try 15:42 or 14:38 with 17" wheels as a start.
You may want a stand from a FS as a mate of mine has 17s on his FE and it stands up nearly vertical with the FE stand.
I believe your chain guard should be fine. New sprockets will mean a new chain anyway (they should be replaced as a set) but the FE length chain may do the job as the axle blocks on the swingarm are reversable to provide a huge adjustment range (or variable wheelbase/effective swingarm lenght when doing trackdays at different tracks  ).
Hope this helps,

Matt.
