As I'm getting to know my (new to me) 2006 FE450E, I've noticed a coolant leak after a 20 or so mile ride on a warm day. I noticed some hissing/spitting when the bike was turned off and parked in the garage and and found the source to be spitting/bubbling in the area circled in RED at the joint…

I've changed the oil twice since I've owned it (once immediately after purchase and another after about 200 miles) - the oil looks to be just oil - nothing out of the ordinary. When checking the coolant level in the radiator (cold), it was down about an ounce or two (after about 200 total miles of riding between coolant level checks).

Does this look to be a big deal that needs to be fixed right away
or something that can be addressed later (keep topping up coolant for now)?

Thanks!

Hi

its up to you really :D

the spec water level is 10mm above the cores in the top tank

at the very least I would have a go at tightening up the head bolts

good luck

you'll need a new head gasket fella I think. don't attempt to use the head gasket a second time unless it has only JUST been fitted.

suggest that you take the head off and clean the 'block' and the head up, then, using a piece of plained wood and some P600 wet n dry (wet). go round the two areas 'always moving on' and rub across the corners from say 9 o clock to 12 o clock.

they can get low points on the cases while the liner is more consistent.

Thanks bush and taffy. It has progressively gotten worse -- after the last MX track ride (i'm losing oil ~ 200ml and even more coolant ~500ml). I've decided to get it sorted and it's now sitting at Boss' shop.

Rick will do a once over and decide how far / deep to go. The bike has about 165 hours and I don't know if the case has been cracked before. Initial thought is head gasket (for sure) and perhaps a coolant hose leak. Rick intends to inspect the rings, cylinder head and check the crank play.

Any suggestions on what else to look for and or fix/mod/replace given the hours?

Thanks!
