Should I be concerned?

Just changed my oil after a track day. Noticed more metal than usual on the magnet. The bike only has 16 hours on it and I change the oil religiously after every track day. This is the 2nd oil change since I installed the slipper clutch. Bike runs perfect. What should I do???

Hi Mike,

guess it´s normal - my (new) FE had about the same amount of swarf for the first ~ 25 hours and oil-changes...
Just keep on changing oil very often until this "running in" dirt has gone.(About 25-30 hours)
As far as I do know, there´s also a bit more abrasive material (hope it´s the right word) due to the slipper-clutch.
Hopefully someone who knows it better will jump in?

Peter

Thanks Peter, it makes me a little nervous seeing metal shavings in the oil with all the main bearing failure discussion. I"ll keep my eye on it and probably take off the transmission cover next time I change the oil and have a look.

Mike

Hi Mike, I have 5000km on my 05 and since I have had the bike (from 2500km) I have never had anything like that amount of metal on the drain plug. Then again I did not see what came out in the first 2500km .Then, I am not racing the bike. It seams high revs may shorten engine life for these motors. What oil are you using?

I think you have the best plan. Just keep an eye on it. I have had a few Bergs, some had more and some had less on the magnet. None have ever come apart, but then again, I dont race or SM my bikes.
As far as oil goes, I dont think it matters as long as your run a good quality oil and change it frequently. A JIS rating is preffered.

Hi Mike,

for the running in period it is better to use mineral based oils.

but please, please:
Don´t let us not start an oil-discussion.

I think (but don´t know) that the metal shavings come a new engine, from very hard usage on the gearbox, a bit of clutch abuse and the slipper-clutch.
As I said: Not only on the Berg, on EVERY new bike that I had until today, the magnet looked like yours for the first hours/ oil-changes.

Spoke to soon,
just changed the oil, got the berg disease! the drain plug is clean as a whistle, but there is very fine metal particles in the oil. They appear to be non ferrous as they are not attracted to a magnet. Aluminium I think.

They appeared to come out of the oil filter when I drained it.
So far I have taken the rocker cover off.

The rollers on the arms feel smooth but I can twist them from side to side so there must be some clearance there. I will wash them out with solvent tomorrow and have another feel.
With 100 hours on them it would be a good time to replace them I think.

The cam chain, DID, is shagged I can pick the chain up 1mm off the sprocket.

The tensioner is out 11 notches out of the the 15 available. Would that be enough to allow the chain to rub on any aluminium ? I can not see where it is coming from.

Is there anywhere else it could come from?

Head will come off tomorrow I think.

Cheers spanner.

Your drain plug is completely normal for one coming from a racing situation. Gear changes etc create the slivers such as you have. You are ok on oil and how often you are changing it. THe only other thing I would do is mix off race gas 50/50 or run 110 VP ( or equivalent ) straight. SM stress teh engine like nothing else and a good fuel quality will eliminate any detonation, audible or inaudible, which will be the demise of your mainbrgs. My buddies ran a 650 ice racing, 5 - 6 hr events with no metal on the plug that relates to main brg failure.

About the cam chain, can't help there, but I do know that the extention of the tensioner relates to chain length. So when teh bike was brand new it may have been out 10 clicks, and once broke in, now is 11. Buy a new one, replace it, and see where it is on the tensioner, then you know. Why is the head coming off?

at 11 out on an old engine - yes for sure. you may wnat to undo the camchain tensioner and woble the waterpump shaft as well.....

fryguy, There was no metal on the magnet on my bike, just very fine aluminium in the oil.

Took the head off and found a small but nasty score in the bore looks like that may have happened a while ago, may have been there when i got the bike.

Also one exhaust valve is leaking.

Taffy, I have the LH side cover off and the water pump shaft feels ok only a little play.

Any other ideas where else aluminium could have come from?

Good news! I just changed the oil after a day of hard running at the track and the magnet was clean. Must have been fragments from the new clutch.

I was getting small particles of metal on the drain plug magnet up until 50 or so hours. Some slivers a little larger and then they tapered off. Lately it seems very minimal. I change the oil between 3 and 5 hours. 83 hours now

I decided to keep this old thread going so the comparison of drain plugs would be obvious. I'm getting some metal flakes too, and want to make sure I'm doing all that I can to make it through this season, then I'll rebuild it next winter.

Here is a picture of my strainer and drain plug. The strainer is missing an o-ring, so I'll be sure to add one. I have three questions:
1. Is this the suction strainer for the oil pump?
2. Is my drain plug supposed to have a magnet on it? I suppose if it did, it would only catch the tiny particles that made it through the strainer.
3. Is there any other way to get a magnet in there to catch stuff?

vwhusaberg,

the plug you have in the picture is for the strainer only, the bolt next to it on the right hand side case (same socket size, but smaller flange) is the actual drain bolt, it has a magnet in it. (see first pic on page 1 of this post to see what is looks like (and what it shouldn't look like in terms of the swarf stuck to it).

Azza.

That plug must have been added to the later models, because I only have the one plug on my '02.

'03 has two bolts. one magnetic one with the oil strainer. sorry faktor!

Taffy
