Please can anybody help .Iam trying to set up my sem stator on my 2002 650 useing a adjustable timing light, i have read the other topics but i sure am confused.
I first find topdead centre and mark the flywheel, the flywhel now as three marks on two factory and the new one i have marked, i then attatch the timing light and let the bike tickover, but when i try to strobe the marks, the line on the stator will not line up with any of the marks on the flywheel ,i set the timing light to 30to 33 degres on the adjusting dial at the back of it, but however much i adjust the stator i connot get the marks to line up, only when the dial is nearly at 10 degres will the first factory line on the left nearly line up , can the great wiseones of this site put me on the right path,

You've gotta rev it to about 5 grand (can't remember when the advance is full in but it'll be in the doc or other posts) and then dial it so your TDC marks line up on the strobe.
Shut down the bike before it explodes and read the dial setting and thats your total advance.
It'll be about 10 ish at idle.
IMHO your wasting your time cos you've got bugger all adjustment anyway.
Just try it in 3 positions - forward, middle and back. Start in the middle.

can't quite agree with that one coastie....

the line in the sight hole wants to be about 2mm left of centre. not 'about' - 'needs' to be!

when you strobe you must adjust the dial on the strobe to make thilines line up and check what you have. close the engine and adjust and then do it all over again.

as a general rule i see 6d BTDC at idle as guide but NOT what i go by.

Hi Taffy
I only mentioned the 10d cos for Billywizz to get this he must be strobing at or around idle speed.
Should line up your TDC marks with the strobe dial when at speed.
I use my own marks that I've made on the flywheel with a reference mark on the case in the centre of the hole so I'm not sure about the 2mm to the left of centre thing you mention.
Still reckon it's all WOFTAM as I don't get any noticable difference over the whole adjustment range but I'm also just a trailrider so don't really give a rats.
May be a different story if I raced.
