Ordered from Husaberg cam bearings recently.part # 36000001 which is the cam bearing in every husaberg that we have any experience with.they have always been an open on both sides ball bearing.what i recieved this shipment was ktm part # 0625062014.a bearing of the same dimensions and grade but it has a plastic shield on both sides, like wheel bearings.to take the cake they are made in tiawan, guess some european pride has been traded to save a few pennies.anyway, what do the engine experts that frequent this site think about sealed cam bearings in a husaberg?i am reluctant to sell them until you convince me.dan.

Hi Dan,
Said bearing is fine as it is more of a shielded design then that of a truly sealed bearing.

Note:
The primary advantage being debris from a failed follower is less inclined to cause further damage as a result of carrier bearing damage.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Dale

The KTM's have been running this same bearing for several years with no problems. I myself am not fond of taiwan bearings though.

I am aware that ktm[boo] has been using these sealed bearings in their 4 strokes for the last couple of years now.i just was checking them out on a 2004 ktm 525 exc that we had the cam off of.the rolling resistance seems to be much more than that of the unshielded bearings.not to argue with Dale's opinion that a shielded bearing will keep metal debris from entering the bearing.using that argument why should not many of the other bearings inside a Husaberg be shielded?just curious.dan.

Hi Dan,
Based on experience I would say it is because the camshaft bearings most often fail as a result of damaged followers. Since followers do indeed fail I believe it to be a precautionary measure taken by the manufacturer in an attempt to limit damage.

Kind Regards,
Dale

Ps
Their may be other reasons, however, I certainly do not know what they would be. :?

I personally remove the seals before installation - I have a kind of paranoia of top end sealed - or should it rather be shielded? - bearings where they're relying on splash lubrication.

I know ball bearings don't need much oil but I figure: anything in the way like.........

Sealed cam bearing

The seal is a good thing it helps fin particles from entering the bearing cage which in the long run will help the bearing last longer, The centrifugal force will push oil into itself for proper lubrication.

sealed bearings

I would think that a sealed bearing in a location that otherwise relies on external lubrication would be better off remaining sealed. There is protection from particles as previous posters stated, and there is a built-in source of lubrication which is immediately available, not only after the oil pressure gets oil up to the top of the head. As long as good grease was used in the bearings, sealed bearings in the cam region makes sense to me. They are relatively inexpensive and can be readily changed out annually with cam inspections. Dale, do you sell a new set of bearings with your X2? BD

Hi BD,
Replacement of cam carrier bearings is recommended whenever the camshaft is addressed as simply pulling said bearings from the shaft (via the outer race) has the potential to do damage.

Sincerely,
Dale

Maybe a stupid question, but why not order these bearings from a normal bearing supplier? If we are talking about the two small bearings left and right, these are 6202 c3 2RS if I am correct. I had to replace mine after 25hrs, they were also made in Taiwan but of a known brand (can't recall what though), one bearing just let go of the balls. I replaced them with NTN bearings. Now 35-40 hrs later, no problems(yet)

My expirience with ordering parts like these at KTM is that you pay the fact that KTM put their name on the package. I mean they charged me 32 Euro for a 13t front sprocket whereas aftermarket were 15-20 Euro (just not in yet at my dealer)
But I guess since you are dealer/distr. you have to order parts from KTM ??
