after just 12 months Tom sagar is to leave husaberg to ride the new suzuki RMX 450z next year with the fast eddy racing team, managed by multi time world champ paul edmondson.

he will start off his association with the team by riding a rmz290 at the ISDE.

Then look to prepare for a renewed assault on the GB and especially the WEC scene.

During his 12 months with husaberg he won the gbxc championship and came 3rd overall in the british enduro champs.

funnily enough, i was having a cionversation in june, not with Tom, and i got the impression that he wasnt getting the support he was looking for from Husaberg and jokingly suggested that they get on the new rmz 450z as suzuki would want someone to campaign it....Sorry all.

that was an opportunity for his sponsors to prove they could shoot at the big time. and i don't think they had it in them. times are hard and its a totally different ball game going from giving out a bike and some tyres etc and supporting a team like that for the season to one where you pro-actively go off testing to learn new things. to actually CHASE a good bike, a better bike.

you just don't see dealers able to invest that amount of money and then also to take advantage of any knowledge they gain on the sales floor by 'connecting the two'. DCR never connected SM development to sales and this would be a further example.

that bodes the question: do you support 4 'jolly good' riders and win the local championship and sell m,any new bikes? or
do you dump them and support one red hot international rider and hope for the same sales in a slightly more unconnected way? and that your success translates to a dealer in aberdeen selling two more and not you!

do you trust that every mod that the rider makes; you can turn into gold?
sure, the best grips can be 'handed over' and sold as a recommended product in the shop, but suspension work will be carried out off site and the knowledge - except for say spring changes - is still unknown even to the sponsor. injection information, even if you get it, you're hemmed in as a dealer from touching the bikes.

i spoke to a dealer last week who had had two sets of conicals break but isn't allowed to go to DVSK? he could lose his status? how ridiculous is that! so even when you learn some things you can't pass it on.

what they should do is perhaps consider a dealer supported team and not just a solus dealer based team.

the development work i do goes directly into the engines i prepare for my bike and the sidecarX team i support. that knowledge will be used in tomorrows customer engines. "as tested by ....."!

in ducatis darker days they not only had a dealer supported rider, they had an owners club (Ducati Owners Club GB) fund as well and for that steve wynn reported in three times that season on developments being carried out to the bike and dropped in a few appropriate "gems" to keep the natives happy.

the man we supported in 1981 and 1982? none other than tony rutter who won the 1981 world championship on a ducati 600 pantah based bike. he then carried on with works support in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985 to bring ducati their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th world titles!

not bad for an owners club and 4 dealers now was it! those that know their history of UK racing will know that this was about the 4th of many times steve wynne was shyte on from a great height by the factory! having produced rutter the factory dropped wynne.

and again those that know their bikes will know the name of the previous rider to rutter that the ducati factory had dumped out wynne over.... one mike hailwood!

who is lined up to replace him..thought knighter would give it a go just to see how he gets on with it,surely he would be curious,or is he contracted to kwaker

Anders, DK

after knighters split with bmw there were all sorts of rumours including that Husaberg had offered him a contract and he'd turned it down.

But it was all internet gossip and you just dont know the truth.

one funny thing though was that during his time with BMW he kept a CRF450 on the IOM to practice on, thats surely an indicator that things werent right from the word go.

but there has been enugh said and assumed about all of that.

I've spoke with Paul last friday on organised by himself practice day.He was sayin about that Tom Sagar gone for Suzuki. He said about difficulties, which he met with Husaberg. After my few circuits on the sandy track, he asked me, why do I ride the Husaberg? Why I dont get any "normal" decent bike? I didnt answer him.

Maybe he was joking or saw you struggling on track with whatever you ride, a 450?
I know he is essentially a 2st 125/250 man and riding rmz290 at the mo and a believer of min weight and only enough power thats needed, which makes sense. You cant argue with a world champion :)
if serious, i would at least have swapped bikes for a lap to get a verdict from him on the berg.
A few years ago i was riding sand and swapped bikes with Euan McConell (who i didnt know) . He rode my 525 and proceeded to hith berms at great speed with the bars about an inch from the ground! Jeez, i thought, thats impressive but he probably rides that section everyday.
Anyway he gave back the 525 saying 'Nahh, thats not for me, i cant get that to work' and i handed back his factory TM400 and said that wasnt much good either.
The following week i opened a magazine and there was a picture of Euan standing on the podium with David Knight..............oops

I think Tom has definately made the right decision team wise going with Little Eddie, not only has the 42 year old kicked his *** in the british champs this year but that 290 goes like stink.

i would imagine that he's going to have more of a chance of re establishing himself on the world scene with eddys set up.
this year with Husaberg he basically jacked in going to the worlds after a few rounds.

i've heard various reasons for this, most not being bike related.

remember in 2008 he was on the full factory KTM team and after a **** season, which i dont think was all of his own making, he still finished 8th in class in the world.

good luck to him.

Definitely, having someone with his experience, worldwide, as your team manager can only be a good thing for Tom.

i somehow get the feeling i was on the money on this one and i didn't have an inkling.....

question is, was this organised by KTM as a back door sponsorship deal via a dealer or did they overshoot.

if this was a KTM UK idea then it's another catastrophic example of their ineptness.

one of these days austria aren't going to believe the "lies, damn lies and statistics".
