I'm looking at options for increasing fuel capacity on my FE570. Safari rear tank is now $480 on eBay. That, coupled with the delays and capacity of the 70degree subframe tank, makes me want to check them out.

Who has one and what do you think about installation and quality?

Thanks,

Hi Mike,

I have the Safari rear fuel tank on a 2011 FE450. Stock tank and fuel pump housing have to be removed to install the fuel tap connection. Just follow the instructions that can be downloaded from the safaritanksusa.com

Tank is high quality and robust. I have had a couple of hard laydowns recently. Only damage to the tank were a couple of scratches from the stones. Unfortunately the badly broken leg has ended this riding season.

Cheers,

Blaine

Hi Blaine,

Thanks for the reply. Pics don't really show the width, does it get in the way off roading? If so is it an easy on/off proposition to have on when dual sporting and off when serious single track riding?

Sorry to hear about the busted leg. One year ago today I had a mild get off that resulted in torn ACL, torn mcl, fractured tibial plateau, and torn meniscus. Still weak but back to riding again.

Hi Mike,

It does not get in the way off roading. It is easy to take off, but you probably want to come up with some kind of quick disconnect for the connection to the fuel tap on the pump housing. It's hard to get the Y-fuel line pushed on to the fuel tap and clamp it with a wire clip. And where ever you make this disconnect point, you will need to capit to keep out all the dirt went that fuel line is not connected. Not a lot of room to get access to the tap.

Also, you have to cut off a large piece of the rear fender on left side (left as in when sitting on the bike) for the tank to fit. If you ride without the tank, there could be a lot of debris from the rear tire flying left and not longer stopped by the fender. Probably not advisable.

Cheers,

Blaine
