What is general consensus around here as far break in .I've got a brand new 550 just itching for it's first real ride ,Hopefully tomorrow. I'm just wondering if I should run it like I'm going to drive it or take it easy.

We are not sure where you are from or what kind of riding you do, but this is my routine. I used to ride them new like I stole them, but I was always having heating problems for the first couple times out. Now, I run them through 2 or 3 heat cycles, and bleed the cyl head every time. They always have air each time, no idea where it comes from, but they always accumulate air even after the first real ride. Now ride it like you stole it. Don't change the oil untill you get 5 + hrs on it, and check the bleed screw, bike hot, dead engine with the cap on.

Enjoy

Sorry am from halifax ns.Most of my riding is a sea level weekend warrior stuff fire roads single track and such and a little bit of road work through the week.

I just finished breaking my FE550, like FryGuy I give it a fair fist full.
Engines are built much better nowadays and it is recommended (un-offically) that they get run in hard to seat everything properly. I generally drop the oil and filters after 50K's or so to make sure there isn't any metal shavings, then run it out to the 3Hr mark ready for 1st service.

End of the day, oil and filters are cheap.

Thanks for the advice guys ,we had some wicked rain last night and today is shaping up to be a good one .I should get the fist oil change in today .Curious I did notice some blue smoke on start up ,has anybody else experienced this with a new bike?

Thumper,

I had the same blue smoke on start, not sure why, probably a bit of packing oil or something left when it was built.
Once you get her hot a couple of times it goes away. Mine dosn't do it anymore nor does it have that new / hot smell which was gone after the first 2 hrs.

yeah ...my brand new 650 berg puffed out some smoke at 1st , come good in the end .

Right you are folks, the blues upon start up are gone, but the sh*t eatin grin on my face remains.

Congrats on the new FE550 dude. Just thought I'd put in a suggestion of pulling the steering head bearings, swingarm bearings & both front & rear wheel bearings out & giving them a good lashing of grease. My 07 FE550 had seized headstem bearings at 20hrs & what looked like petroleum jelly in the wheel bearings.

Too late now I know but some have suggested running them in with mineral oil to bed in rings better as it's not as slippery as synthetic. Happy riding man & like Kelsow said that smile will stay until you sell it ( to buy a better one )
