I own a 2001 FE650. The other day I was changing the oil and found quite a bit of shredded rubber on my pickup screen. I have checked the external seals and found no leaks. I replaced the lines to my remote filter and cooler and cut open the old ones. No deterioration there either. There is no debris in my oil filter.
The bits of rubber are no larger than 1x1mm and are quite soft. Any ideas?
Also, does anyone know what my oil pressure should be. It is 5psi at idle and climbs to only 8psi when reved up. Is this too low? Both my service manuals state nothing for oil pressure.
 
welcome to UHE husabergh. you'll find the oil pressure value in the doc on the left of your screen. it's in the engine area under blueprinting or wear and tolerances i think?

the rubber you describe is someone completely over doing the silicon when they replaced (usually) a sidecover. there are three main seaqls.

2 = on the crank near the main
1 =gearbox output

then you have three in the sidecover. 2 = oil/water seals on the intermediate shaft and the third is on the extreme end tip of the crank.

there are 3 x 2rs bearings in there as well. 2 for the cam and one behind the lower timing sprocket which is again on the intermediate shaft.

oil seals will go if a valve spring breaks.

how are you measuring tour oil pressure?

Thanks Taffy, but I must be a bit slow. I could not find any figures regarding what the oil pressure should be in the doc's section. Most of the info there is what I have in my service manuals.

I measured my oil pressure off of a "T" fitting that I installed on my remote filter.

I replaced my side covers quite a while ago and I used no silicon sealant. Just Permatex Aviation gasket which is totally different. But it could have come from somewhere else as I have never torn this engine completely apart yet. I hope that it is just silicon but it doesn't really look like silicon.

I removed my stator cover and still have found no leaks there either and if a valve seal was broken I would probably be pushing a lot of blue smoke I would imagine.

I truly hope there will be no rubber on my next oil change.

This may sound like a ssssttttttrrrrreeeeettttchhhh but check the inside of the intake manifold (rubber) and see if you've damaged it installing the carb. If you did, maybe bits of the rubber made it to the engine.

could you post a photo of your test equipment?

Check the breather rubber house on the valve cover. Mine got brittle before it broke and parts from it can drop down in the engine. Also in the house there is a piece of foam to capture the oil mist. This can also deteriorate.

I have checked all that you guys have suggested but no luck. I still have no external leaks and all is running fine. I changed the oil again and I found more rubber and more aluminium. I will try to post photos of my oil pressure gauge and my bike.

what about these external lines? if you had them made? maybe they did a sloppy job?

i can only think that a previous owner left something in there and it has now got caught up in the gears and has been ground to a paste?

what are you using this for and where are you from?

sidecar cross?

I just want to tell you that I had a mainbearing failiture, and before i could feel some more vibration or performanceloss I did get black rubber in the screenfilter, that i coudent understand from where it was coming from, and a couple of hours later when the main did go and i deasamble the engine I saw it was from the inside of left crankseal!! The metal from the bearing had torn the rubber from the seal.

more than likely, your pic is too big. resize it so that it is about 1200 pixels wide using a program like paint or a legitimate photo program, rename it and try it again.
