Howdy,
My friend Jeff and I went out riding in lucerne valley last friday to help tie in the UEA enduro the weekend of the 4th of december. However, "the" group had left @ 0700 and we arrived at 0830, and since we had no idea where they went we decided to ride loop three of the 100's national Hare & Hound from a few weeks ago.
The weather was just about as perfect as you could get, maybe 65 or 68 degree's, no wind, and bright sunshine. After unloading and getting our gear on we decided to take a break and just enjoy the morning for a few minutes. Jeff had brought a thermos of coffee, so we had a cup and appreciated the quiet.
We finished our coffee and headed east. The course wasn't too hard to find, but, I lost it after a few miles. So just kept heading east and stumbled onto it again in a wash that I recognized and we were back in business.
Before we had left I had taken two clidks out of the slow speed compression, and a 1/2 turn out of the high speed compression on the shock, as I was wanting "a little less feed back". The difference was pretty amazing. I shold have just made one adjustment so I could be sure of my assumption, but, I believe the change I made in the high speed adjuster really allowed the bike to be a bit more settled in the whoops, and was much more compliant over the rocks.
On with the course, it was tight and technical but not crazy hard. Very fun! We had a couple of stops along the way, one unplanned one when I was checking on my friend and turned around to see a road crossing, no big deal but I hit the rear brake too hard stalled the motor, which put me on the bars, and the road crossing put my face on the front fender, then into the front wheel, sky, dirt, uffffffffff. Hadn't done that in 15 years!! Wasn't too bad, just felt like someone kicked me in the kidney for about 5 mins, then okay. Jeff had his turn later in some really soft sand, his was much more spectacular but not painful.
We got back to find our enduro brethren getting ready to head out again and they told us where the start of the second loop was and that we should head over and tie as much ribbon as we thought neccessary. After, a soda and some lunch we headed over to the second loop and began tying ribbon. It's a great trail, slow and technical, that led us to a good sized up hill and a gnarly downhill made up of loose volcanic rock. Should be a lot of fun after about 25 or30 people go over it!!
By this time it was getting late and the shadows long. We got back to the truck and loaded up, and then spent a couple of hours hanging out with the guys at the camp fire.
We took off around 6 and headed into town and had dinner at Tom's #20 near Ave D and the 15 freeway. Great food and alot of it. A great way to end a fantastic day of sport!
