I've seen a few threads for the newer bikes, but not the pre-'09's...
So, the problem is, I'm short, and the bike is tall. The crazy kickstand swings up if I lean the bike slightly to the right, and I don't trust it to hold my weight, so getting on and off this thing is a major chore.

I've never had a kickstand where I didn't need to use my foot to raise it. Am I just stuck dealing with this, or is there a way to make it more normal?

It's an '08 FE450... thanks.

If you read the manual the kickstand isn't actually designed to hold your weight, only the bikes. So if your getting on it with the kickstand down then your doing it wrong. All I can think of is getting a lowering link for the rear and changing the fork setup to suit your height. Other then that I think your probably stuck with it.

Agreed, it's not meant to hold your weight.

Also, if you let it retract unchecked it will eventually break. I never once sat on my bike with the stand down and mine broke. I guide it up all the time now. Before it broke, I would only guide it up about half the time.

I should've been more clear... I don't want to use the stand to support my weight.
I don't get on the bike with the stand down, but getting off without using the stand is almost impossible.
I can't see how you could "guide it up"... it flies up so damn fast!
Maybe I'll figure something out in time, but I've never had a stand like this.

(I'm not getting lowering links, although I am getting an inch cut out of the seat.)

30 inch inseam here...on my 01, ii just use my foot to guide (slow down) the stand retracting. I also carved out the seat which makes a huge difference. I also "choose" the right place to stop...wheels low in something like a rut, or on top of a whoop with high ground for my feet.

Yeah, my inseam is 29/30 or so. I guess I'll have to try to slow the stand from retracting, so it doesn't break. I'm surprised no one has retrofit a normal stand that you have to use your foot to raise.

I like it our kickstand, its like a ****y trap, a random dude lifts your bike off the stand and the kickstand breaks his ankle and the bike falls on him.....couldnt get any better in my opinion, of course my inseam is more like 34"+ if you beefed up the bracket that holds the kickstand you should be able to "lean off" fine.

still would have to hold it down and lean off at same time, i do it all the time, just have your foot at the end when it hits the ground and keep your weight on your foot more then the stand as much as possible, it will become natural fast...

I'm getting better with it... I actually climb off the bike on the right side now (which is weird). I know it's going to fall one of these times, though.
Here's another annoyance about the stand... when putting the bike in a truck, it's a hassle to keep the stand from flying up as soon as you tie-down the right side handlebar.

Don't mean to sound like I'm complaining... I LOVE this bike! It's actually the most fun dirt bike I've ever ridden.
