I know this topic was covered awhile back but I cannot find it.

Does anyone know of a 'better' replacement battery for my 2003 FE501E please? If so, a product name & part number would be very handy - Thank You.

I was under the impression that the battery in the post 2001 bikes was as big as you could fit without major rework. Mine is a '98 model & I used a Yuasa YTZ12A, available off the shelf in Newcastle for $165. The YTZ14A is the same size with better specs but I couldn't find them in Oz.

Hi,
I have had the battery box moved up into the space under the seat where you can install a taller (read "higher capacity") Yuasa battery. The original is the YTX5L-BS and the taller battery is the YTX7L-BS which fits into the original box. Works a treat! :D
Cheers

biggish

i've just ordered a YTX7. do you know what the last letters stand for and will i get one like yours automatically?

Taffy,
I suspect they indicate the type of battery - ie: maintenance free, sealed, etc.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

The battery from the 04 models fits well on the 01-03 case.
the ref. is Yuasa YTZ7S :p :p

Earlier I said ...
"The original is the YTX5L-BS and the taller battery is the YTX7L-BS which fits into the original box."
Just to reiterate, the YTX7L-BS will fit into the stock battery box but is physically taller by about 2cm so you can only use this battery if you've moved the box to under the seat.
If you're looking for the higher capacity battery which is the same size as the original, as fitted to the '04 models, then it's not this one. Could however be the YTX7S as also mentioned - check at www.yuasabatteries.com.
Cheers & good luck.

While the YTZ's don't give you much of an increase in amp-hour rating (energy capacity) over the YTX's, they do give you a big advantage in available cold cranking amps, which is what you need to crank the donk fast.

The technology used to build them is different. The YTX comes dry with the electrolyte in bottles. The YTZ is wet from the factory.

Luke,
The YTZ7S is the easy solution. It will fit straight into the existing mount and will give both faster and longer cranking than the standard YTX5L-BS.

Yuasa don't import them into Australia so you have to buy it from your Berg dealer.

thanks for that Brian. I will order one from 'Foxy' in readyness for the Stockmans Rally.

YTX5L-BS dimensions are
(L) 114mm X (W) 71mm X (H) 106mm
This is the size of my battery box. But the YTZ7S is (W) 79mm with the others only a mm either way. Unless this info is wrong from the Yuasa site I cant see how it fits into the battery box?? But Brian says it will, and I beleive him.
Island Batteries here in Tassie can get me an after market version of the YTZ7S so they are available but I'm still waiting to hear from another shop regarding the genuine Yuasa but there is a big price difference, aprox $55.
I'm not sure what to do now, I could get a larger model and fit it in the space between the shocky where my other battery is now, something like the YTX14L-BS 200 CCA and little bit bigger and aprox 1 kg heavier.
Brian can you measure your battery box please?

i've just recieved my YTZ7S and as stated, it is the same. if anyone with an '04 is reading this perhaps they care to answer it.

the battery holder on the '02 (and presumably '03) doesn't allow the keihin carb overflow pipes to fan out underneath it.

did they raise the battery holder on the '04s so the pipes can lay underneath or is there still only a 4mm gap?

It is the same as what? The old battery? So this means the web site is wrong with the dimensions then?
I dont run the over flow pipes down that way, I have them higher up away from water.
Taff, what are the dimensions of your new battery?
