What should I put on my 02 650? Can I use a more powerful bat then standard and keep the existing starter. Would a better bat be more useful re the existing e starter? (that's rarely effective of course!) :?

Are there any problems with a more powerful bat and the standard wiring :?

Does the 04 starter really just bolt on to an earlier bike without wiring upgrades etc :? If so what can I expect?

What would I do without you guys :?:

Regards

Rowley

i know that the higher spec batteries HAVE made a big difference to all the 650's so try it as a stand alone mod. it's not too expensive. look at the starter motor afterwards.

don't stop spending now...

hi rowley
i have the same problems with my 02 650 only the dealer i bought it off did all the hard work ie spend money on it they put the bigger battery on off an 04 ithink its just a bit taller the starter of an 04 is a bit longer but if you swop the bracket as well it will go straight on no probs with wires etc
does it ever start on e ? mine will when its warm now which i think is all we can expect .Ive only had mine a couple of months so still messin and learning stuff but everything needs to be bang on have you downloaded the hard start guide off here that has loads of useful test values definately worth it! have heard an optimate is a good investment me im saving for a decent pair of m/cross boots to save my poor dr martins keep messin but make sure all is 100% before you start buying new starters etc

I just take a big battery charger and
prestart the bike at home to warm it up.
I may make a plug that connects to my trailer
connector on the truck if that method fails. If
I have to kick this thing any more it will be off
a cliff.

Battery

What make, model and power is the bigger battery chaps?

Thanks again

yes yes yes

This is the last time I will say this!!!
My dealer informs me that they have now changed aprox 6 bikes 03 and older with the NEW 04 550/650 s/motor and YTZ7S battery and it cures ALL the probs because the motor now turns over much faster and you get a bigger spark!
I dont like the idea of using a battery charger to jump start a bike, I dont think this would be good for the coil? Its not the same as using another battery from a car?

I now have my Opti-Mate charger and a brand new YTZ7S. I may just order up an 04 550/650 starter and bracket it would be so nice to see my 01 470 start on the button. I would be ecstatic. How about an 04 starter and two YTZ's run together with one under the seat!

Wouldn't it be nice if Husaberg could post these updates on their website (or here would be much better) so that there would be some sort of definitive answer to solved problems. Thanks to all Husagrurus here, Dale, Brad,Taffy, Scully and many many others for their insight and assistance. :D

Jumping the bike can TOAST the coil.

With respect to Scully's comments, jumping the bike can definately do the coil in. I know, because I did, and I did not do anything wrong that I could recall. Maybe the coil was marginal anyway, but thanks to the hard start guide, and learning what to check, I was able to diagnose and replace only the part that was bad. Now I'm running a used coil from a 2003 501 and it is working fine. No more jump starts for me. My leg works just fine. BD

Ask 'em where the hell they get the Yuasa YTZ7S batteries! Yuasa don't
bring them into Australia, and my dealer says he can't get one from Husaberg. The Dynavolt YTZ7S equivalent is just a bit too big to fit in the battery box. I know as my mate Ian (Eon) got one. I would also prefer the Yuasa as I think they are better quality.

Adam - I got the same response when I asked Yuasa for a YTZ14S for a pre2001. It seems they do some kind of buddy deal with OEMs by not importing certain battery sizes, the *******s! I previously had a Dynavolt YTX9-BS in my bike & it was not a patch on the YTZ12S in it now.

Scully/BD - I still disagree that anything attached to the 12 volt system (jump starter, charger or otherwise) can have any effect on the spark system including CDI/coil unit. The two systems are supposed to be completely isolated from each other. Could it be the coil was dying anyway?

Adam, I don't understand that. Just before the 04 was released, I emailed Norm Bromley at Husaberg Australia and he told me that they would be stocking the battery.
Is your dealer saying that Husaberg don't bring them in or that they are just currently out of stock?

I'm not surprised that Yuasa don't bring them in, the battery isn't used in any other bike in Australia that I know of so the low volume of sales wouldn't be worth it for them.

Hi Brad, I thought so to.

When Scully was looking for a battery, he went to his local Yamaha dealer but the WR450 battery they showed him was a different size.

I was told that I could not get one through Husaberg. Maybe I'll send
Husaberg Australia an email. Once I get one of these, then fix or replace the starter motor, fix the broken ignition switch, stop the waterpump seal from leaking, and check my counterbalancer was installled correctly (too much vibes) then maybe just maybe I can sell the ferker!

Brad, I'm no expert, but jump starting from a battery charger wouldnt be good for the charger, and wouldnt the small type of chargers most of us have be less powerful than jumping from a car?
Adam, Any Battery Only dealer can get you a generic YTZ7S, if we can get them down here anyone can.
Twisty, Thats not exactly true, I wouldnt piss on my local Yamaha dealer if he was on fire after the problems I had with my WR250F! What I said was, the measurements at the Yuasa web site were incorrect, and I was worried when I ordered it from "Island Batteries"(here is Tassie) that when it turned up it might be wrong? But it was exactly the same, and fitted in the battery box. (it's actually on charge now, as I just gave the other one 2 hours trickle)
