Friends!
Around Christmas, we bring out a traditional remedy for deepfrozen friends here in Sweden. A drink similar to the Gluhwein of the alps, yet different. During my years in California I had to reverse-engineer the recipe, since it is unique to Scandinavia. I have further simplified it for you gearheads:
Step 1: Take 501cc of sugar in a pot large enough to hold a gallon.
Caramelize it. You know, melt, stir until medium brown.
Step 2: Pour 501cc of red wine over sugar. Keep warm and stir until sugar is dissolved. Don´t boil away the goodies!
Step 3: Add another 501cc of red wine. Add a two spoons of cloves and two sticks of cinnamon. Warm it up gently again (and don´t boil off the goodies!). Take pot off the heat, cover and let sit for an hour or so. More time = more taste.
Step 4: Strain and pour back into pot. Add 501cc of cheap brandy or vodka. Reheat gently and serve your still frozen buddies.
You can successfully put a few raisins and peeled almonds in each cup when you serve.
For the seriously hypothermic crowd, skip the second 501cc red wine and replace it with another 501cc brandy... very potent indeed and not for the weak.
This is what we call Glögg, and it is the stuff of Christmas Northern.
Cheers!
Pete
