any big issues mechanically with '03 501's? anything to watch for, check out when shopping? thanks

Mikey

My 03 has been reliable with approx 150 hrs, likely more. It has had regular oil changes and valve adj., nothing special.

Knowing the hrs of the bike and inquiring about oil changes and valve adj. What kind of oil did the owner use? Many hrs and good oil is ok as long as he changed it often with regular valve adj.

Don't be afraid to turn down a steal.

not as many hrs but no problems as of yet...has alot of engine noise but after taking the bike to a mech. this is from the elect starter and not to worry...overall the bike is a great machine ...used can be got for a good deal

Mikst - could you expand on the timing chain issue a little?

I've also got an 03 501 which has been 100% reliable (well it blew a fuse when I landed a stoppie once  :D ) and has got about 30hrs motard track use on it so far. I checked the valves at 600miles and found they needed opening up a little, since then it's been much easier to start. Aside from that just the usual, oil changes & filters etc.

With the information I have Husaberg uses IWIS timing chain -02-04. -05 there should be a D.I.D. timing chain and -92-01 Regina timing chain. It seems that IWIS last around 100 hours. I replaced the IWIS chain with a Regina last year after 130 hours others need to do that before 100 hours. The timing chain tensioner was in the last notches.

The timing chain tensioner could be damaged as well. If you search in the forum you will find some information about this. Taffy has a photo in the gallery.

Hey Mikey888
I'm sorry man, but I have bad news.
Maybe i've been unlucky, but here's a few problems i've had.
Backfire caused sprague clutch to shear also damaging clutch basket teeth.
Secondary gear sheared off from electric start motor.
Water pump seal went quickly causing coolant to weep from bleeder.
Auto decomp worn and knackered after 45 hours.
Solenoid and charge fuse - way too low.
Fork seals went after 14 hours.
Clutch plate smashed after 40 hours.
Terrible starting problems.
And these are very quickly off the top of my head.
From experience I still think 'bergs' are a good light powerful bike, but one might be better off with an 04 model.

Regards
Ady
