Hi All,

I don't have a berg anymore and don't get on the site much. Back when I had the 02 470 I spent a lot of time trouble shooting the ignition. You guys were a great help and I thought one of you might have some advice for me.

I recently spent some time trouble shooting my TL1000S. It seems pretty clear how to check various components of the charging system. I was able to check the generator for various AC / Resistance values engine on / off etc... I also was able to check the rectifier diodes by looking for the voltage drop between the input and output. THe one part that i don't understand is the regulator. I understand zener diodes in descrete terms and how ICs can manage the same, however my question is more practical.

Why doesn't a modern R/R output ~14.5V DC without a load. The configuration is A/C connectors are plugged into the generator, engine running, output of RR unplugged. Why can't I measure a 14.5V output. Unplugged two different working regulators only show ~ 3.5V DC. If the Battery is connected then I see the Regulator jump to 14.5 V (Battery alone is ~13V).

I was thinking that the load of the VOM wasn't enough to turn it on but not sure.

Thanks,

David

David ... Wow wow wow wow my friend.
Those regulators don't give a voltage on the DC side if their is no load.
Stick a car headlamp across the terminals if you wanna test the output sir, cos you won't get nothing without a load connected.

Hope this helps

Hi Ady,

I know you need resistance to measure a voltage. Its just that normally a Voltohm Meter can measure such things by measuring the drop accoss the VOM's internals. ANyway i guess maybe the RR's have some sort of logic inside that requires a 12v - 13v source to be present before they will output 14.5v

Thanks, Dave
