I just purchaced a 00 fe501 as a non goer bike seemed in pretty good shape. stator was damaged ,replaced that but as I got further - 2 exhaust valves bent, cam chewed out ,rollers blue, piston scored and a damaged bore Plus the little end bush had been pushed out the side of the rod! Has anyone bored out the nikasel cylinder and resleved it with cast iron 0.5mm u/s remachined the piston to suit ? tring to save some money!

How bad is the damage in the sleeve? The nickel can be replaced if the wear does not penetrate through the coating. Nickel coating is VERY tough stuff, and can last a long time. The cost to replate it is around $150-200. Pretty sure that doesn't include piston, but does include boring.

That is a great year bike, definately stick with it, as you will be very happy. Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you. But, the amount you might save with an iron sleeve won't be enough to justify it, IMHO, considering all the other damage and costs associated.

Edit: Sorry, my eyes must be half shut, coronaberg is bidding on the first item, not selling it!

fwiw, coronaberg doesn't own these items... he wants to own them. :)

rebore and re-nitride is the way to go or get something cheaper off e-bay. europe is a lot bigger than USA. 300-400 items for sale here.

the valves you can get through your dealer-don't scrimp on used here unless something local comes up.

look very closely at the inlet valve's seats as the valves are known to tulip.

good luck

Thanks for the responses ,ebay may be the better way I was quoted 1100.00au for a new piston and replating the cylinder which I feel was a little expensive!
After reading about the new cams you can get I might get one from over there also

Regards Geoff

it was re-nikasil not re-nitride i meant. nitride coating is another time another story...
