I am going to reassemble with out counter balancer
and see how it runs. Any suggestions or warnings
welcome. I will be talking to you soon for parts

The crank will have to be balanced or at least should be. Dale Lineaweaver would be the best person to ask about this procedure.

Have yet to be into a pre 2001 E button motor with a balancer, but am assuming from the posts that the drive gear comes off the crank and the driven gear is machined into the balancer making the set quite expensive. Having owned an e start pre 2001 bike, was told by the dealer that the E start driving the motor caused all the problems ie broken gears and spragues. Simply remove the intermediate gear and starter and you have a balanced Berg that won't break. Of course you have to kick it, but such is life. And think of the weight loss with the battery and all removed. Now to help with your headache, Possibly Peter at HMS would have a used set.

JoeUSA have bikes with no counter balancer. Dale Lineaweaver did the balance job for him. The only back draw I have heard is that the stator could give up earlier caused by more vibrations.
However, ask Joe about his experience.

i removed the balancer and the bike vibrates quite a bit more at idle. after that though i couldn't feel the difference - then again i do race and wouldn't notice a nice arse even if it was waved in my face!

ll crank assemblies can be rebalanced a wee bit better than the production line job but it is going well beyond reasonable prudence.

you simply do what it says in the owners document. i have some phots in my gallery and i believe the owners doc has a link to the thread.

good luck!

Like Taffy i removed the balancer and the reliability has so far been fine. It should be dynamicaly balanced as i did with the 400 but the 550fc i didn't and it gets a serious beating and no problems. get rid of the bugger i say!

The bike I own doesn`t have a balancer. I only notice the vibration at idle and then it is no problem. I agree with others in this thread go for it and once you have lightened your bike up you will notice the difference. Good luck.
