Hi, Should I have 18" rear and need to put a new rear tyre on. It is listed as 130/80/18 in the manual but I have available a 120. Can I get away with the 120 or is the 130 a better option or not a big difference ?

If I am running the 130/80/18 should I assume that a 120/90/18" is not going to fit or be worth putting on ?
 
yeah it'll fit it just wont be as wide as the 130.

130 is the width.
90 is the sidewall height as a %. so the height is 90% of 130.
18 is the wheel size.

different makes can have big differences in ther sizings.

my mate runs an '06 FE 550 berg with a 120/90 retread on the rear.

He runs West Coast Trailbike Safari's down the south west of WA & swears by them. Less than half the price of a newie & he hasnt had any problems yet. You can go to the supplier website at www.mxretreads.com.au/ & check them out yourself. If you've had a berg for a while you'll know how long the rear tyre lasts. He will also be able to give you the good oil on the size issue.
 
mxretreads do a 130 only ? and recross do a 120 from what I gather. Maybe they both do others ?
 
I run a Dunlop D606 120/90/18 seems pretty good but my bike is my daily rider to work and stuff too. So she see's a lot of bitumen.
 
How do you like that D606? Still hook up ok offroad? I was thinking of getting one....
 
Gotta Love it OZZIE: "bitumen." Aka "ashphalt" -- but really asphalt or pavement... It sure is nice to have such a diverse group of bike enthusiasts! Some kind of Michelin on my bike...handles ok, but the on and off of the wheel very nice....not like those cheap Cheng Shins -- ouch my knuckles!

Got to agree with you about the descriptions.......over here though we think you guys have the funny sayings. Ashphalt, Pavement ? AKA. Bituman or Tar ! he he

I also run the Michelin - get good life from them easy to change but a bit noisy on the tar.....ah Bitume....Ashp.......you know what I mean.

I actually went in the garage and looked -- freezing here this week! Michelin Cross Competition MS11 (rear 130/80-18 ) and M12 (front 90/90-21). Putting a 120 on a 600 will result in more wheel spin with a little less forward motion.... I am glad you guys see some humor in the American gibberish! I have a friend in Melbourne (Seaford)...we get together and tip a few stubbies...and start laughing at each other! Watch out for those wombats!

Aussie force, you can get confused with sizing because the manufacturers measure there tyres differently eg michelin measure their tyre from the edge of the outside knob where as eg metzeler get their measurements from the actual casing of the tyre thats why a 130/80x18 michy is physically the same width as a 110/90x18 metz. To clarify it michy have put a small yellow stamp on the tyre which will read smaller than whats moulded on the casing. hope this helps.

If your shopping for tyres you need to take a look at a new Aussie tyre on the market called MOTOZ there made by australians for our conditions they made of natural rubber not synthetic we tested them on our race bikes in some of the worst conditions at the condo 750 2007 650 berg and 540 ktm and cant fault them for wear, grip and puncture resistance. ask your local dealer to contact them in sydney and get on as a stockist. details are in aust dirtbike magazine
they will be used at Finke and the Safari this year. I rate them Highly
