Any update on this? I'm in the process of setting up my '07 FE650 for dual sport, and I'm going to put a rear rack on it...somehow/someway.

One idea I have is to use some steel tubing with an ID about the same as the OD of the frame. I think it can be split and then wrapped around the frame and held tightly with stainless steel hose clamps.

The tubes would have nuts welded on them, and then corresponding holes drilled through the plastic so that a threaded rod, washers, spacers, etc. can be used to mount a rack fabricated from aluminum plate, etc.

I have a friend who's good at welding and fabricating such things. I think it would work, and would be completely reversible other than the holes in the plastic.

A couple of months ago I had to construct a rack for the rear of my 04 berg for a long distance ride to accommadate 40 odd kgs of weight over the rear end, fuel and supplys.
I used 5/8 and 3/8 chromemoly tube and nickle bronze welded it myself. I braced off the 30-32mm tube on the frame where the tank and seat meet using U bolts, then I supported from around the foot pegs up toward the rear guard. You can see in my gallery a couple of pics from a distance of the weight carried. I will try and put some of the close up pics of how it was made and fastened to the bike, it may give you some ideas for yours , although this one was a pretty heavy duty one which would carry 10 litre steel jerry cans either side.

Ned and EngineNumber,

Thanks for the info! I'm going to use that phone number and investigate.

Engine#,

It looks like you added pics. That's one heck of an impressive rack. It's far more robust than required for my anticipated needs. However, it does indeed open my mind to other approaches. I don't know when I'll get this done...I'm not in a real hurry, but when it is done I'll post pics.

Thanks again.
