Overall the bike runs very strong.I`am still experiencing hard kicking and that has sort of put a damper on where I ride. When I first start it I use a milk crate to put my right foot on then kick with my left.It generally starts in under 10 kicks if I take my time. With out the crate I can`to start it{to short legged and the kick starter will not budge} but I hope the starting improves in time. The engine still has around a hour on it and later this week or next time I change the oil will check the valves.Have a slight oil leak not bad; think it is coming from the breather tube. The motor mounts are working like a charm and I might be able to check the valves without removing the radiator. So far so good.

Hi, Bill.....
Glad to see your getting ride time on your 'Berg. As far as being a bit short legged for the starting drill, I'm 6'2", have lanky frame, and still have occasional problems trying to hold bike up and kick!! Seems to be worst-case when I've got all my gear on, have been riding for a couple of hours, and then stall it on a sidehill  !!!!!!
Keep on ridin'!!

Hi Bill:

Good to hear that things are getting sorted out.

I always keep a tie down with me. Especially in the morning first thing I will "hang" the bike from the trailer. It makes kicking pretty easy. On the trail if I am tired or kind of cramping up I just take the tie down and hang the bike off a jeep or other large vehicle if handy.

I tracked the hard kicking down to a binding cable.Once I removed the cable, things have gotten better{starting wise anyway}.Before I did this I could remove the sparkplug and the engine was still very hard to turn over. After removing everything including the sparkplug I turned the engine over using the kickstarter that is when I noticed the cable binding. The cable in question is the one that runs from near the kickstarter to the head. This cable wasn`t hooked up on the head side on my bike but the intercable was binding against the top of the cases while kicking.Hopefully that is solved. The bike started on the 4th kick after that so maybe I got it.Something like that might have been wrong with other members bikes a thought  .Still snailing along but things are starting to get interesting.Take care.

Yeah, that'll be the auto-decomp cable - it does half make kicking the bike into life a lot easier

I had forgotten once to tighten up the bolts that hold it onto the head and during the day it became harder and harder to kick and start - for a while, I too thought something horrible was happening :D

It's definitely always worth checking.

Cheers,
Simon

I did my first valve adjustment check.I discovered that all 4 valves had tightened up until there was no clearance. After adjusting and then double checking I got all of them right the only one that gave me trouble was the right exhaust where the compression adjuster is.I took the bike on a test ride and the bike ran strong but I noticed that after running hard in one gear and letting off to change to next gear the bike back fires through the exhaust about 2 or 3 times not real loud but noticable{sounds like over rev.}.The bike did not do this before. Is it posiable something might be wrong? The bike started on the 5th kick but can still be a bear to start.MX boots and a milk crate are the only way for me to start it.Sounds right or is there some I need to check. Thanks and take care.

i'd do those tappets again wildbill. this time completely wind out the adjuster screw and then in a few times. you tend to get a better feel for it after a few 'spins'!

Wildbill, you are telling that you have a slight oil leak from the breather tube. I route my breather hose via a carheatherhose down the frame with the radiatorhose and put a cork in the framehole so when you fall down, the oil can't get in the frame and carb, but spills it on the ground. This helps also starting after you crash. Every little thing helps, and check your valves monthly if you ride often.

Yes that would proably be a good idea since this was the first time for me.I still might have them a little to loose.Seems like every time I think I have time to take my time and do these things right the "boss"starts growling about other things I need to be doing instead.I will try to get to it when there is a bright sunny day so I can see what I`m doing good. Thanks and take care.

Thanks for the tip.I found my leak it was the hose at the breather tube.I will be replacing it and the radiator hoses as soon as I can.I did the breather hose mod. a while back and it saves a lot of grief. Thanks and take care.

I checked and adjusted the clearances on all 4 valves. The exhaust adjuster that was giving me trouble I replaced.I replaced the radiator hoses and have now got everything back together.I will let you know how it goes{if there is anything that sounds or does something weird}.Thanks Taffy for the advice on the adjusters has helped a lot.Take care.

Everything checked out good.No leaks and drips.Had a slight miss traced that to the plug cap not all the way on.Changed the oil, needed it.Still can`t get over how strong this bike runs as compared to the old engine. If I have any problems later on I will post. Thanks again.
