hey guys........ putting my berg in a box together, still on the crankcase. first question should be an easy one. bike is a 99 fe400e, on the left side of the case behind the kicker idler gear on the inside of the case, there are 2 threaded holes (for screws or bolts) and a raised flat area(best i can describe it is it kinda looks like where you mount the thermostat in your car, only alot smaller. it is machined from the factory around the shaft for the idler gear, so what I am saying is it looks like something should go there but in the parts and repair manuel it shows nothing going there. anyone know of anything that could go there? next question is it has a plastic oil pump gear. while it is apart, should I replace it with a steel gear if one is availible or am i just afraid of a plastic gear? when I get it together hopefully in 2 weeks or so I willl post before and after pics......
later guys,
Dan

The mass majority of pre 2001 OEM idler gear shafts incorporated a flange which screwed into the case. Your shaft is obviously without said flange.

Not to worry....

Your's is likely a late revision minus the flange. The shaft had such a press fit you could not get it out if you wanted to.

Hi Dan,

Here is page 47 from your parts manual. It explains the assembly order of the Kick intermediate gear, there isn't any thing else in the case features around the gear shaft.

The oil pump gear is composite, it is shown on page35 which is attached.

Regards,

Joe
