Hello,
I just bought a 2011 FE 390 and did not have time to go over it with the dealer, had to get to work. I have no idea how to charge the battery and can't seem to find it in the manual. Is there battery post that are located somewhere other than on the battery itself that are easier to get to ? Second question, oil change and type of oil. I am coming off a ktm 200 and been using Rotella. Dealer said I need to use full synthetic 10w 50, what do you think. Also this skid plate looks very flimsy, what brand and where should I buy a real skid plate. Last question, since no kick starter should I buy another battery and have in in the truck at all times, just in case.

Thank you,
Located in Fort Worth, TX

Q: I have no idea how to charge the battery and can't seem to find it in the manual.
A: Pull the 20amp fuse on the relay under the seat (if you do not the fuel put will run while charging), then connect charger directly to battery posts.

Q: oil change and type of oil, been using Rotella. Dealer said I need to use full synthetic 10w 50.
A: Yes synthetic, I have used Rotella for the past 5 oil changes in my 2010 Fe 390 and it runs great. Additionally I used Rotella for the past 10 years in Honda and KTM without issue.

Q: skid plate, what brand and where should I buy a real skid plate
A: personal preference here, but consider the following-

My guard is the Enduro Engineering, I selected it because is allowed oil changes without removing the bash plate.

Q: no kick starter should I buy another battery and have in the truck at all times, just in case.
A: Batteries are 100 to 140 bucks. When I had a starting issue, I just push/bumped started the bike. Up to you.

Been racing a 2010 FX450 since 2009. Have never had to charge the battery even if the bike has sat all winter.

Skid plate, I use the one from Pirie Performance Products in NJ. Hand made when you order.

Oil, use what you believe in.

Kickstarter? Never missed it!!! No extra battery...

Re charging the battery, I have permanent leads (with end dust cap) conencted to the battery that I wind up and place near the air filter when not in use. The lead then plugs in to my wall mounted 'battery fighter stage charger'. I never have to undo the fuel pump as others have - mine never cycles by itself.

PS dont forget to check the tightness of the battery terminals on the new bike - some have had problems.
