I have something to ask.The bike starts alright and runs good but from right above idle the bike surges or hesitates just a little{that is the bike in gear pulling out or piddling around}.Feels like a lean spot. The bike revs through this and runs great otherwise.Should I lower the clip on the needle to cure this or just leave it alone.Doesn`t seem to hurt anything. The bike is a 96 FE 501 and the carb is a VHSB 38mm Dellorto as far as jetting I have pretty much left it alone since it does just fine over all. What do you think?

Bill,

Try opening the idle fuel mixture screw 1/2 turn counter clockwise.

Let us know if this helps, and it still starts O.K..

Bill,

The 96 FC501 I had liked the fuel screw out 2 1/2 turns as well have to agree this is a good place to start. Let us know how it works out.

Thanks I will try that. The bike starts with the choke on but right after it fires I have to flip the choke off. Thanks again.

I tried what you said,it works better took care of the stumble.Once I worked the kickstarter past the compression it started about the same.I had to set my idle down a little but otherwise it is a lot better.Started on 2 kick hot.Still have to use my crate but that is nothing new. Thanks again for the help. :D

stumble

Wildbill,You did not say if this problem just occured or it has been there for sometime. If the bike had been working fine and then one day it had a stumble then it is unlikely that an adjustment of the pilot screw will effect a permanent cure.It is possible that your carb has a worn needle and needle tube, just as likley is that your carb has dirt or deposits blocking some of the holes in the emusion tube and/or a partially blocked slow speed jet.I would recommend a carb strip and clean, air filter service and a good inspection of your bikes service items before simply turning the pilot screw and calling it good.Remember that your bike is always "talking" to you, even slight changes in the way your bike feels and sounds can be a precurser to events to come....nsman

The bike has done this ever since I first got it.I cleaned the carb at same time I put the new engine in at that time I put in a new float valve and seat. The carb will need some new parts later on but at the time everything seemed to be in good shape. The stumble was right above idle like when you first pull out{in other words low rpm}but the bike revs through it with no problem. The pilot screw could have been out of adjustment before I got the bike. Thanks I will keep a eye on this.
