All,

I am working on my 95 FE600. After disassembling the top end, I noticed that my cam followers were missing some needles.

Intake: 10 needles
Exhaust: 14 needles

I know there are two designs, one for the newer style, one older. Mine is the older.

Question:

Can anyone (dealer or not) confirm how many needles are supposed to be in there?

I seem to recall the number being around 18 or 20 when I did this a few years back. I checked The Doc, but the info was not there. I know I need to replace them, that is a given, but I'm curious how many are missing.

Thanks,

-Parsko

PS - This was a "spare" motor I bought from a guy that was intended as a back-up race motor. I think it was a good thing the primary engine did not fail!

RE: Pre

got the old onse i took ou of mine a while ago will count them tomorrow.

mine is an '03 though.

RE: Pre

no i haven't, had a clear out couple of weeks ago and they must have gone.

RE: Pre

Cypher,

Thanks for the effort! I am mostly curious. I'll replace them when I get back to the US anyway.

:D That was a good one!

The bearing should have a "full house of needles". In other words as many as you can fit. The newer ones have a pin diameter of 8,5mm, if I remember correctly. The pre 2003 pin was smaller (maybe 8,0mm).

Dunno if dis elps.

Gollock to ya!

RE: Re: RE: Pre

Doc,

Yeah, I know they should. That is what I recalled from previous replacement. I think, from the Doc, that the two diameters are 7.6 and 8.0, with 7.6 being the newer size.

One of my biggest questions is: how could these things possible fall out?

There is a pretty hefty gap between the bearing and the rocker. Without my calipers, it's around 1mm. I think the spec here is 0.3-0.5mm (if memory serves). Clearly, mine needs to be tweaked a tad to close that up...

PS - The brits can't spell. Doc's Swenglish is way better then their proper Engilish :) :)

RE: Re: RE: Pre

Hi Parsko!
Lucky for me, most of the UHE people are forgiving when it comes to spelling. Sometimes I miss out on the correct technical terms, but each mistake is a lesson. :)

As for the pin diameter the Doc is, of course, correct. I measured some of the ones in the workshop and they all were 7,64 mm. The correct swenglish would be: "I was out bicycling". Or as I've learned here at UHE: "Talking outta my arse".

It seems nearly impossible to loose a needle when mounted. Could it have been missed in the last assembly?

This is a gem:

Thanks Dr. C!!!

Also thanks for the measurement! I'm not sure how they could be lost. I suspect that the gap between the two faces of the bearing and rocker could allow them to slip by, since my gap seems large. Or, someone canabalized these rockers bearings in the name of another set of rocker bearings (though I don't know why one would do that). Oh well, hope I'm not out bicycling...

Oi! Watch it you! There is at least one Brit here that can spell and use proper grammar (not this new fangled nonsense coming out of texting and such like, you know) - but then again, I'm half Swedish when thinking about it so perhaps it's just proper Svengelska (also known a Swenglish). :D

I might just have a couple of the old rocker arms (2001) lying around in my garage, I'll try and have a look in the next day or so to see if I can help.

Thanks Mate!!!!

Well, I've found a couple of rollers and measured up (these are earlier spec.:

Pin diameter is 8mm (give or take a fraction of 0.01mm)
Number of needles for a full house = 17

Hope this helps,
Simon
