Hi,just registered as im interested in buying a Berg 650 sm as a second play bike to sit alongside my ktm superduke.... ive been in touch with a local guy to me that has a 03 650 for sale that is currently having its engine rebuilt, didnt blow up but needed a refresh as it ws starting to get a little noisy...its having the crank bearing mod done as a matter of course and everything else in the motor checked over in the process..... its also had the carb changed to a fcr 41 with twin throttle cable set up,full *** akropovic exhaust,re powder coated frame, berringer 310 with 4 pot caliper up front, been used as a road bike not as a racer so not thrashed it would seem..... im just curious as to whether its worth holding out for a later model? 04 onwards has been said to me to be more reliable due to the ignition changing over to a kokusan item, and a mukini carb fitted, well the carb has already been changed, and with the crank bearing being uprated also would this particular 03 be worth looking at?..... any pointers for a potential berg owner to look out for here?

thanks

i have an 03 650 fe yes if you can aford it get an 04 up, but the 03 is a good bike all years have little nigly problems but thats the husaberg like or not go for it

As a former TT600, WR450 and KTM 640 adventure owner, I don't think you can go wrong with a Berg. They all have their dramas some where. Enjoy the power to weight ratio and the power delivery. Awesome.
Cheers
Garry.

Would the smaller 550,501 engines be better for street use than the big 650? is the big one too big at times power wise?

Quick unrelated question,
I have recently (2 days ago) bought a 2002 FE400 with 2K km on the clock. (i owner)
Looks like it's beed looked after 2 annual oil changes etc.
I'm a little bit unsure of the (low / hi) switch on the right hand side of the handlebars.
does anyone have any idea what it's for.
The guy I bought it off said he's tried it in both positions aand it's never made any difference.

Mike

hi mike,
welcome to uhe. as a note, you'll get a better response if you posted it as new rather than a reply to an unrelated subject.
the switch is a gimmick to change timing characteristics (lo speed performance vs hi speed). most people don't see a difference.

Rigga, the power is so nicely delivered that you have total control. It can be a bit "holy sh!t" at full throttle and lots of revs, and that's exactly where the grin factor is. I recently rode some tight single track and the 650 was just as happy in that as it is on the fast open stuff. They are so versatile, you will love it.
