Hey Guys, need some input with a "bearing rattle" that seems to be coming from my bike, just behind the clutch basket. I have worked around the bike with a screwdriver to ear & the most noise seems to be coming from behind the clutch cover at the rear of the engine.

I've got perfectly clean oil ( changed every 5-7hrs ) & the bike only had a re-build 25hrs ago. I was coming home from a ride & gas'd it up to 140km/h ( just to check the top end  ) & when I backed off, the noise appeared. I've been for a 2hr ride since & the noise doesn't seems to have gotten any worse but still persists. I've taken the stator & clutch covers off exposing cam chain & clutch basket & found nothing out of place & no bearing movement. Only 2 clicks left on the cam tensioner but I've been assured thats no biggie.

The May ride in Louee is coming up & I definately want to be dragging this bike down from QLD to ride so any input would be apprecaited. Any checks I can do before I pull the motor & send it south for appraisal would be helpfull.

Cheers,

Wal

PS; I spoke too soon...Mine's just fine Very Happy

The other thing I have been warned about is not overfiling your radiator or your oil, this can lead to the dreaded weeping problems.

Have fun & ride loose brother Cool

common source of strange noises on clutch side of bergs is loose primary drive gear nut........but thats not the rear of engine where you say it is coming from.......

With the noise of the engine it's hard to say exactly where it's coming from. I took the side cover off & nothing was loose by hand. How loose would it have to get to vibrate ? I know I'm going to have to pull the sidecover off again anyway so I'll go & do that now. Spewing though...I'm going to have to wreck my "wildman special" w/pump gasket I made from the only thing I had handy  see gallery.

Cheers,

Wal

I have just had similar sounding noises that appeared to be at the rear of the engine inside my 2003 Fe400 so i stripped the clutch cover of everything seemed OK all gear nuts secure could not find anything so put it back together noise still there so just to be safe fully stripped the engine, only findings, tiny amount of play in big end so fitting new rod kit, and counter balance/camshaft chain shaft bearings inner and outer seemed to run roughly so changing just to be safe all other bearings had recently been replaced and seem to be serviceable, so i will let you know once engine back together if noise has gone, if you do find something please let me know while mine is in bits

What are the gaskets that I need to replace when you check the primary nut? Also, should I upgrade any parts (2007) while the case is open? I am reading about the water pump seal for example.

rattle

Does it make the same noise in gear? In neutral all the gears will rattle with all the lash.In gear the trans will stop spinning and should get quiet. Just a thought later Jeff.

Is this a button bike?? the sprague and idler can make a bit of radcket "just " before they go... How do I know this?? 01 and 05 both

almost certain main bearings failure

Hey guys,

I spoke to the KTM tech guru this morning & after explaining to him the circumstances he informed me that it was almost definately a main bearing letting go. I pulled the sump plug out to find a mass of metal flakes stuck to it. Bike still runs fine but no way can it be good so out with the motor & off to the shop for a quick ( & cheap...not! ) rebuild.

Yes bobzilla, it's a button start.

Thanks for all your reply's.

Cheers,

Wal

GUT your exhaust, and i promise you wouldn't hear the noise anymore! :)

In good hands

Hey guys,

I've spoken to John at Orange & the motor leaves in a box ( very sad sight  ) from here today. I'm sure I'll have my bike to ride by May 5th, it's in good hands I believe. Ozrider & myself may both been bringing out steeds down in bits as ORANGEBERG has got his stator also. Were organising a tarp for the trip to cover the colours so no-one knows they're Husaberg's, either that or write DRZ400 on the tank & sidepanels !

Cant wait. You know when it's getting close cause the missus starts to ***** more about all the money I spend on MY bike.

Yes Cafey, that beer is going to taste even sweeter when its after a long day riding my FE550.

Cheers,

Wal

Hey Wal,
You are brilliant....... leave thurs night like you said, it will be dark mate, no one will see us or the spare parts we will be hauling in the back, wont need the tarp .... Its all good. But you knew that hey

6 more sleeps

Hey Wal,
you should get the water pump fix done while they have the motor apart. I reckon no one could fit it better than John's mechanic Aidan. He's a top bloke with lots of great advice as well. I almost bought a EXC but on Aidan's advice went with the FE650 and I am one very happy camper now.
Cheers
Garry.

Hey guys,

think you could be right faktor about the big end. Just have to wait now & see what the doctor finds.

I had the choice of taking it the local KTM dealer who said " We'll have a look at it for you but it's gunna take alot longer cause we haven't worked on one of these before". I said " thanks anyway mate" & sent it south to ORANGEBERG to do the business.

This bike has done 180 hrs & had 3 rebuilds already without a waterpump leak so I'll probably leave it for now. I'm just about broke with this ride & everything & I haven't got the bill yet for the rebuild. Cant wait though. There's a few eyes at Husaberg & alike on this event so it's gunna be pretty exiting.

Cheers,

Wal
