Hi Guys,
A mate's 02 FE 400 seem to have fallen victim to a dead SEM ignition, I know we can get this sorted but wondered if it can be up graded to the later style units for more reliability long term...or is this not done / possible

Cheers

an upgrade from a sem to a kokosan (or however its spelt) has been done once as far as im aware the pictures are buried within the gallery somewhere but it is a major amount of work and with the quality of the SEM rewinds that are now avalible its hardly worth it.

Thanks Guys,
We'll just go with a new SEM and that should solve the problem...thanks for you assistance

Cheers

Heya pilot,

I'm not sure if it's old news to you, but IMO, buying a new SEM stator and buying a rewound stator from a third party are two very different things. Unless something has happened in SEM production that I'm not aware of, the new units are made with the very same shortcomings as the one that's coming out of the bike. The crews rewinding them are using better materials(thicker wire, etc.) to rewind them, which has resulted in a bunch of people doing cartwheels and coming onto the forum to say fantastic things about them, stopping just short of offering to have their babies.

The only gent I know of on this forum that rewinds them is sparks. There very well may be others though.

thanks,
json

I have had a local SCR, from Geelong, rewind done and it failed quicker than the SEM original. The sparks rewind is still going strong, and the definite benefit is easier starting too.

pm sparks
